Gelsomino in Pomarico

Postby 4mykids » 27 Mar 2007, 01:42

My grandfather, Michele Gelsomino, was born in Pomarico in 1883. His birth record list his parents as unknown. It was noted that he was brought to the city hall by a midwife who found him in a church. He was given the name Gelsomino by the clerk. Are there any records available during his childhood (and before he came to America in 1902) that can give me any indication where he lived or who he lived with? It's possible he was adopted or lived with foster parents. He did come back to Italy to marry Antonia Armandi in 1908 in Italy. Those records too did not list any parents. Any help would be apprecieated.

Hello,
since Michele Gelsomino was found in a church, you can request to the priest to check on "Stato delle anime" record.
This church record states all the families belonging to that church, families who used to attend the sunday mass on that church

Write a letter in italian to the priest, asking to have that record

Reverendo padre
S. Michele Arcangelo
Via Chiesa, 75016 Pomarico (MT)
Italy

I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

Thanks for your direction-I'll give them a try.

Riccardo-would you recommend sending a "small donation" to the church for the look-up? I've been told that sometimes the church regards these inquires as not important.

Suanj-I'll look around and see if I come across anything.

Thanks for responding.
Chris
