Raffaela Onofrio from Benevento, Campania

Postby jeffreylocke » 15 Apr 2007, 23:41

Greetings,

I am new to this board and have undertaken a family history project for my uncle.

His mother was Raffaela Onofrio who was born in Faicchio/Benevento around 1894. Her parents were Giovanni Onofrio and Anna Gianotti.

Raffaela came to the USA at some point and married Antonio Perillo in 1909. They settled in New Haven, CT

I understand that for some reason, New Haven has more immigrants from Faicchio than any other USA location, and I am not sure why.

If anyone has info about this family or about Facchio, I would be delighted to hear it.

Also, if there is aything in New Haven that I could look up for someone, I'd be happy to do so.

Anyway,

Hi Jeffery,

I can't comment on New Haven specifically, but .. this is what happens.

You live in Italy and have decided to make the big move across the ocean. You have a friend or neighbor that has already made the move. He lives in New Haven. Since you are going so far, might as well settle in a new place where you know someone. The friend probably offers help with finding a job, maybe where he works. Probably offers temporary housing and helps you get settled. Now that friend in CT has a friend from the old country living in his new home town. This continues over time. More from that same town in Italy decide to leave and the easy choice is where there friends and family have settled. I belive the term is chain migrartion.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your research.

Debbie

As Debbie says, Hello and Welcome to the Forum :D !
Have you pulled up Raffaela Onofrio's
1907 manifest yet?
Line 5
1907 page 1
1907 page 2
You're right, quite a few folks from
Faicchio/Benevento headed to New Haven
Have you pulled US Records yet?
Is your interest in US records, Italian or both?
Thanks! Valarie

WOW! Thank you Deb! You have spared me a few grey hairs.

I am looking for both US and italian records, but mainly Italian.

I was recently told that the LDS church has a lot of info on Facchio and the people there, but I just heard this yesterday and haven't followed up on it yet.

Then I stumbled upon this site and decided to give it a try. My uncle will LOVE receiving a copy of this manifest!

You are welcome. Glad we could help. Valerie posted the manifest - its always thrilling to actually see these things.

There are limited (1809-1860) for your town from LDS.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0

If you are not familiar, here is a post by Trish on how to use the microfilm:

http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/inde ... pic&t=2581

You will have to write to the town for more recent records.

This will help explain some of the numbers written on the names on the passenger manifest that Valerie posted:

http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/occ/

Lets see what we can find for you in USA records.

For research in Italy:

Information on the town:
http://en.comuni-italiani.it/062/029/index.html

You have to send your request in Italian. Here is how to do this:

www.anzwers.org/free/i...talrecords

or

www.circolocalabrese.o.../index.asp

Our Italian friends have advised sending a copy of your ID and two international reply coupons with the request.

I would suggest reading Tafford Cole's book, Italian Genealogical Records. You should find it at a library. I use it so much, I bought a copy. Lynn Nelson also has a book "Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" that is a good source. These books explain the various records, give examples of the actual records and translations.

Hope this helps,
Debbie

You're welcome Debbie. I did the easy part.. :D

We were expecting snow the other day but it missed us. The winds however were horrible! And its damp and ugly but suppose to get nicer as the week progresses. We'll see..

I bought Trafford Coles book at your suggestion and you're right..its definitely a must. Still waiting for Lynn Nelsons book to be available..it's difficult to get here so I may have to order it from the US

Wow--Thank you everyone! I am overwhelmed.

I wasted a couple of days at the library looking at the census and found the family in 1930 but not 1920 or 1910, I was very confused by this, because I KNOW that they lived in NEw Haven -- two of their children are still alive and assured me that they lived in New Haven.

Now I see that the names were mispelled. I don't know if I ever would have sorted that out on my own so I very much appreciate everyone's efforts and time.

In another post somewhere here, someone posted about gentracer.com so I contacted the woman for the heck of it.

I guess there is a gap between when Raffaella was born and when the LDS records for Facchio begin. The lady at gentracer will write two letters of inquiry for Raffaella's birth and the marriage of her parents.

She will charge $45 for this, which includes a translation of whatever reply she receives. This seems reasonable to me so I am going to go for it.

This info should fill in the gap and enable me to connect with the LDS information. She said it could take one to six months for the reply.

In the meantime, there are other aspects of the family tree that I can work on. This was a big family and uncle Mike is interested to know what happened to his parents siblings and their children.

Thanks so much!

Jeff Locke
