WHERE TO GO FROM HERE?

Postby tinkrrbel » 08 Jun 2007, 20:04

I have just begun researching my Grandmother and Grandfather from Italy. I have been unable to find them in census records or in passenger lists and I am becoming frustrated! Any help would be appreciated. Here is what I know:

Both reportedly born in Contessa Entellina, Province of Palermo, Italy. Unknown DOB.

Emigrated to New Orleans, LA, sometime between 1890 and 1905. Had two children, also reportedly born in Contessa Entellina, named Anthony (possibly Antonino) and Mary (possibly Marie), that traveled with them. Port of departure supposedly Palermo; port of arrival supposedly New Orleans.

The only documentation that I have begins with my Grandfather, Nicholas Lombardo. I have a Certificate of Baptism from St. Peter's Catholic Church in Reserve, LA. Info as follows:

Childs Name: Nicolas (different spelling than Nicholas, which is what he used) Lombardo

Parents: Antonino Lombardo and Josephina Catara (possibly Cataro)
born in: This Parish (???) on August 28, 1905.
Baptized September 4, 1905.
Sponsors: Bernardo & Rosa Montalione (unknown if any relation).

Shortly after my Nicholas' birth, sometime between 1906-1908, Antonino died in New Orleans. I can not find any death records for him.

BRICK WALL! ANY TIPS????

THANKS!

Christine (Lombardo) Sheflin

Welcome to the Forum!
We'll see what we can do to get you over that wall  .
Did Josephine remarry a Russo (sp?) & move to Chicago
by 1920? May have a census ... (will link in a bit)

I just called my father. Yes, she did remarry a Frank Russo and they eventually settled in Chicago. He is unsure when. They apparently had 8 more children, in addition to the three she had with Antonino. How did you find that? I checked Ancestry.com for days. What am I doing wrong?

Christine,
Absolutely nothing!
It just takes a bit of practice to use the ancestry
search feature.
I looked for a Lombard*
born in 1905
born in Louisiana

Generally, you can start a search with what you
know for sure, then start modifying if you don't
get results:
- shorten names to as little as three letters
(with an * at the end)
- eliminate first and or last names
- search only by location and birth date/location
Lot's of combinations!

Once you get the first record, you have more clues for
the next.

OK?
