Why was it important to name a son Giovanni Battista ?

Postby denman922 » 20 Jun 2007, 02:25

Can someone tell me why I have so many ancestors from the 18th and 19th century that were named Giovanni Battista.....

John the Baptist, I know, but why did everybody do it?

Was this a fad or something, like naming your child Farrah, Cher or Paris?

In my husband's ancestral village, Giovanni Battista was the patron saint, so it was custom to name a son after him, especially when you ran out of names following the tradition of first son after the father's father, second son after the mother's father. My grandfather was the third son, and he was named after the patron saint of his town.

I found several Gianbattista names. Gian is John in some areas of Calabria. He is the patron saint of many calabrian towns including my grandmother's home town, Cortale.

My g gran was Giovanbattista.

Remember Italian naming traditions. If he had 5 sons, each of those sons would have named his first son Giovanbattista. 5 grandsons with the same first and last name.
