Valarie,
Nice finds.

If the manifest and census records are correct, I found a WWI draft card for a Salvatore Capaldi in Auburn with birthplace of Celano, L'Aquila.

edited to add
There is a town called Aielli just east of Celano in L'Aquila.

Hey Biff!
That's great news on Aielli.
Can't find Vincenzo's/James Capaldi's WWI Card.
That's odd...

Hope we have the correct family :D

Okay...
VJ: The 1920 & 1930 Census are correct.

But the 1907 Manifest and 1910 Census doesn't look right. My grandmother Grazia Capaldi was born in 1906 - either her mother was pregnant with her or she was an infant when they arrived in NYC. Grazia (Grace) has a younger sister (Rose) who was born in NY. She also had a sister Vinny and a brother name Jimmy.

But the 1920 & 30 Census show that the son's name was Angelo

Salvatore Capaldi sounds very familiar - I will need to ask my father if he knows the name.

The 1930 Cenusus with Frank Charles and Grace Charles as lodger are my grandparents.

Little is know about my Grandmother's side of the family (Grace). I just remember more of my grandfather's (Frank Charles aka Raffaele Ciarla) immediate family

VJ......

This is one heck of a job tracking this family on so little initial info. Kudos!

bsnclr:

The passenger manifest and the 1910 census are, indeed, your family. The 1910 census messed up Grazia's name as Rosetta but the rest is your family...errors happen with spellings often. The person giving the info may have said Rosetta for Rosey then said Rosey and the person listed the name twice...whatever. This is indeed the correct listing.

The passenger manifest is correct. The last name of Luisa is Polla, if I read it correctly. It is a name found in Aielli, where they were all born.

One census also indicated that Lousa had a child that died.

On the manifest for Louisa, there are markings indicating that their papers were check so they could become naturalized citizens. You can request this paperwork and find out more about the family. Request the first papers: Declaration of Intent and Petition for Naturalization..these have the more detailed information. In addition, Louisa's entry line lists the date of 4/21/29 as the date the records were checked for legal immigration. This means she was naturalized after 1922...she had to apply herself at that time. Prior to 1922 she could have been naturalized on her husband's papers, but after that date, she had to do it herself. So you might find out more about her family as well.

Get the naturalization papers...all seemed to apply separately so there should be a real source of info for you. Good luck.

Hi Essgee!
Your analysis really pulls the records together.
Always learn something new from you - especially
in this case about the naturalization process:
"Louisa's entry line lists the date of 4/21/29 as the date
the records were checked for legal immigration.
This means she was naturalized after 1922...
she had to apply herself at that time.
Prior to 1922 she could have been naturalized on
her husband's papers, but after that date,
she had to do it herself."

The clues are in the details :D !

Barbara.........

VJ supplied the information you needed for the naturalization of Louise. Look at her post. You will need to contact the county court in Cayuga County. The petition number is listed in Valerie's post and it gives you a starting place.

Also go to the passenger manifest that Valarie linked to. Look at the lines that list Louisa and the children...there are numbers there as well that list dates where this manifest was checked to determine that they entered the country legally. Make sure you reference this manifest...copy the date of arrival, the ship, etc. and the lines your family is listed on. This will help identify the correct paperwork.

Rmember, the person had to:

1) Declare his intentions to become a citizen--this form is called the
Declaration of Intent. Filled out first.

2. He then petitions the government to become a citizen and rejecting his ties to the government of the country of his origin--this form is called the Petition for Naturalization. Filled out within 7 years of getting citizenship.

3. The actual citizenship papers--the Naturalization paper.

The last form is actual acknowledgement that the person is now a citizen. But it doesn't contain as much information as the Petition does, or even the Declaration. So it is the first papers you seek.

There is a good chance that this paperwork is available on microfilm through the Family History Library as well. They can help you locate the microfilm numbers at the library branch nearest to you.

Go to NARA.gov and see what info they have on the naturalization process.

As for the Capaldi info...the records of Aielli are only partially microfilmed. They cover from 1809 to 1860. These can help you, but you are going to need to write to Aielli to obtain the data from 1860 to 1900 to help you in your research as you cannot go to the library and access the info yourself...as I did on the records for Ripabottoni. Look at wldspirit's message on the Ciarli thread...it gives a great outline about those records on microfilm.

The postal code for Aielli, L'Aquila (AQ) is 67041. I am sure either Valerie or Lee will be able to find the posts with how to write a letter requesting informaiton from the town office. I cannot find it, and I know they are well versed in locating prior posts.

It will take time to locate the info you need, but you can get it done. Hang in there......

And let us all know what other help you need.
