Creative mis-spellings for surname MARCHI?

Postby peggymckee » 08 Jul 2007, 17:44

Hi all!

I'm trying to find my Dad's birth records from 1916. Can any of you suggest ways in which the name Marchi, when handwritten or hand printed, might be mis-transcribed or mis-spelled.

One possibility is Marclu. When written in script, if the "hump" of the "h" is pointed & the dot on the "i" is faint, "hi" looks like "lu". Another is Harchi (hand-printed M looks like H). Any other suggestions, no matter how far out, are welcome.

Here are some possibilities that are already on my search list:

De marchi
Macchi
Machi
Marcha
Marchay
Marchei
Marchey
Marchie
Marchio
Marcho
Marchy
Maschi
Morchi

I'm hoping that the ceriticate exists but that the surname is wrong.

All the best, Peggy

You could also try "DI" in addition to the "DE" that you have listed....

also, MARCHE as in the region.

Hi, in some of my searches r's have been recorded as m's so marchi might be mamchi, or manchi, try those too. I also found that if they didn't spell it and they went by sound the chi might be recorded as a k, marki or marky way off but might happen.

The other thing is that in italy marchi and de marchi are names that might have been altered slightly, could marchi be abbreviated for something longer like marchini, or machino ?

Here's what I know......

My dad;s family is from St. Elia Sicily. They were MACHI but it was changed to Marchi when they came to America.

Marchi and DeMarchi, as far as I can tell, are Tuscan names. So it could depend on where your dad was from.
