Brasile/ Luciano

Postby misbris » 20 Jul 2007, 16:59

This is my maternal grandmother. The manifest says that this is her first trip to the US, but the family story is that she was here as a child. Her father worked in the mines in PA and died or was killed. The family returned to Italy and her mother remarried. I have no idea of her mother's name. but I saw on the manifest her step-father was Nicola Luciano. I believe she had only one sister who married a Vinciguerra and remained in Italy. There may have been step-siblings, but obviously her mother was dead in 1920 or she would have been listed on the manifest.
Castelvetere in Valfortore is the town, Benevento the province.

I have some feelers out in Italy to get more information, but right now I am looking for any proof she or her family were in the states around 1900.

First Name: Maria Giuseppa
Last Name: Brasile
Ethnicity: Italy, SoItalian
Last Place of Residence: Castelvetere, Italy
Date of Arrival: May 11, 1920
Age at Arrival: 25y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Madonna
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0022

Thanks,

Mary Jo,

Maria Giuseppa's mother may have still been alive. I believe it was the custom to list the nearest living male relative, if one remained, which likely would include a step father. Do you know what mining area Maria Giuseppa and her mother and father initally settled?

For reference, line 22, traveling with brother-in-law, line 23

Yes, my Grandfather Giuseppi Marinaro was already here. They married in Italy. He got out before the war and could not send for her because of WWI.

I am hoping my great aunt's children know the story, but they are elderly and speak only Italian. My uncle is trying to get some of the story from them, but it is difficult.

I have no idea of my greatgrandmother's maiden name or my ggfather's given name. My uncle will try for Certificato di Stato de Famiglia Originario from the Italian relatives, but meanwhile I am trying to find any US records.

As always Biff, thank you for your help

misbris..

I'm a bit slow tonight so forgive me if I ask some questions that you may have already answered..

Maria Giuseppa's surname at birth was really Marinaro or Brasile?

She was born around 1895?

Who were her parents?

Again sorry..having trouble focusing but I would like to help if I can.

Brasile Manifest

Heading to Chicago to see Giuseppe Brasile, father and husband. Passenger on line one is going to see her brother in law Giuseppe Brasile..lists his surname as Bellomo I think.

There was a mining town in Chicago I believe. Need to confirm with wldspirit but I believe her grandfather worked in one.

Thanks Nuccia for that information.

The girl is too young to be my grandmother. Gram was born in 1894, but this family is from the right place and the town is so small they are probable relatives. I wish I knew my ggram's maiden name. I have to do more research.

I was trying to find the website that lists the surnames by town, but I can't find it now. I want to know if there were Brasile's and Basile's in Castelvetere. That would answer one question.

Mary Jo,
There are both Brasiles and Basiles in Castelverde per the following. Scroll down to Family Names in Castelverde and click on the link. When that opens you'll see a list of the main surnames. Luciano is one of them. At the bottom of the page you can do a search by individual surname in the comune. You'll get results for both Brasile and Basile.

Nuccia,

Sorry I'm a little wacky today also. I saw your 2nd post and not your first.

The problem is that I don't know her mother's name or her father's first name. Brasile was her maiden name, Marinaro her married name. Nicola Luciano was her stepfather.

Biff,
that was not the site I was looking for, but it was even better. I remember many of these names Bibbo, Lupo, Bontempo as my grandfather's friends.

I guess I am lucky that all my family surnames are unusual so it makes hunting a little easier. I only have a few Brasiles to go through.

Unfortunately, I've noticed that the earlier manifests have much less info on them than those after the turn of the century.

I'm hoping that my uncle can contact a family member in Italyfor more info.

Mary Jo,

You should write the comune and request her birth act which will give you her parents' names and should also contain annotations on her marriage? And you should contact the Brasiles in the comune as well. If you need any help, let us know. We'll be happy to lend a hand.

If my uncle doesn't come through, that is exactly what I will do. But if her father did die in the US, I'll still have some unanswered questions.

As always, thanks

By the way Biff, I hope all is well with your health.

I was doing some further research and just realized I misread my Grandmother's manifest. It does say that she was in PA from the years 1900 to 1912. That means she was about 5 or 6 on her original trip. I am assuming that she was travelling with her mother (whose maiden name I do not know) and that her father was here already.

We have already exhausted the Ellis Island records without success.

Could someone check Philly manifests (1899-1901) for a Maria Giuseppa Brasile probably travelling with her mother and a sister from Castelvetere Valfortore. I have confirmed her birth date as July 14, 1894.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks, you are all so great!!

I did a really quick check on the name and I found no records of any Brasile in the Philly manifests. Again, it was a quick one. Sorry I couldn't help.
