Dimita from Santeramo in Colle (BA)

Postby mdimita » 25 Jul 2007, 18:19

I have names of my great grandparents born in Santeramo in Colle but they emigrated to the US with all 9 children. I am trying to find what brothers and sisters they both may have left behind in Italy. Dimita Raffaele, born 1864 and Fraccalvieri Maria Francesca, born 1868.
In addition, 6 of the 9 children remained in the Akron, Ohio area. Their surname Dimita was altered to DeMita : Tommaso, Michele, Giuseppe, Anna, Dorotea, Rosamaria. Francesco went to Florida and Maria went to Pennsylvania. My nonno came to Oakland, California. I am looking for any information on whom my great aunts and uncles married, any children etc.
Thanks!

Hi.... :)

Got your pm and posting the info here....we have a great team here at ItalianGeneaogy, and working as a team can discover more details to further your research!!

Thanks!!! Well, I can and DO confirm the census. As for birthdates of the children, I have thonly the following:
Salvatore, 15Aug1890
Francesco, 14Apr1892
Rosa, Aug1894
Maria, (Married to Peters, né Pichichero) 27Mar1906
Giuseppe, 1909
Dorotea, Feb1911
...Only thing is I don not know of the wherabouts of them (dead I am sure) but ther than zio Franco and Zia Maria, whom did they marry, any kids, move? etc...
Thanks for the help.

This is my nonno!! He is buried here in the National Cemetery iin the Presidio in San Francisco. He was born 15Aug1890 and died in 27Mar1941 here. Birthplace is mis-spelled-as usual LOL!!! It is Santeramo in Colle.
Again, thanks!!!

Got sidetracked.... :P Back to your post now!!

There is microfilm available, going back to 1809, thru the Lds.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0

Guide to obtaining microfilm:
http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... =2581.html

Genealogical word list:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... Italia.ASP

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/ ... LLatin.ASP

To find a center near you:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

You can research from this microfilm or you have the option of sending for records to the town of origin....
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/ ... talian.ASP

I would start with the birth acts of the children, to gather dates of birth since you know the parents name, then on to the marriage act of the parents which will list their parents, allowing you to go further back!!

Here is a link also to the specific town of interest:
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/puglia ... colle.html

Sorry to hear your local Lds is by appointment only.....but they are a wonderful resource to use!!!!

Here are the death records I located, this will not in itself tell you who married who or the names of the children they may have had, but can be used to determine birth and death dates. If you obtain copies of the death certificate, it will usually list the spouse's name, and often may list one childs name as the person who provided the info.

I feel confident that these records are related, as all are in Summit county, and it appears your family were the only Demita's there.....

Thanks!!! It is a start, too bad there are no wives names or children.
The information for Zio Franco is incorrect.....he was a widower, wife's name was Clotilda...they lived in Coral Gables, FL.
The death dates help!!!

Immigration as 1919 in both, alien in 1920, naturalized in 1930,
with the exception of Francis and Mary.
Ralph and Francis married abt. 1888......
Dominick and Mary married abt. 1926.

You can send for the marriage applications as well as the naturalization.

Hope this helps......

Hi! Anna DeMita is my Great Grandmother. She married Henry (Eurico) Constantino. Their 2nd daughter Mary (Maria Luisa), is my grandma--from Akron, Ohio. Have you been able to find any relatives in Italy? It's late for me right now (1am), but I can't wait to start learning more about our family history. ~marla
