Rubino, Fillippe (Phillip, Philip) HLEP

Postby Jrubino5280 » 28 Jul 2007, 19:57

I have been searching for months and months for my great grandfather. There were many rumors amongst the family of his mob ties. I finally found some reference to him. Born 02/25/1895 in Palermo Sicily, he married Jennie Latino, had my grandfather Simon in 1918 and two other children before he was shot in the chest with a shot gun outside his home 08/26/1928. I found numerous LA Times articles about him.

I can't find when he came over from Italy. My grandfather says he was between 18-23, so 1913 - 1918. But seeing as how my grandfather was born in 1918, he was here prior to that. I also have a copy of his draft card dated 06/05/1917. So it could be anywhere from 1910 to 1917. When he was murdered he was with relatives by marriage, Frank and Benny Latino (his wife's brothers), Joe Cuccio and a man named George Chinnici. Joe Cuccio is my grandfather’s uncle and was married to Mary B. My Great Grandmother Latino had a sister named Mary but her middle name did not start with a B and the birth dates don't match up. This may be Phillip's sister? My grandpa is getting up there in age and the details are very fuzzy.

Years ago I say a photo of this very stout man in what looked like wrestling apparel. At that time my grandfather said it was a photo of HIS grandfather in Sicily and that he was the anchorman to an acrobatic act. Later that warped into that was his father but Phillip Rubino was not a stout man. Anyone who can help me get unstuck to trace this side of my family back would have my gratitude forever.

Jennifer, have you sent away for any
of Filippo Rubino's naturalization paperwork?
Should have some excellent clues to
locating/confirming his ship manifest  .
Valarie

Any chance he went to Philadelphia first?

Could have. My dad said that somewhere in the house is a passport or papers of some sort. He's trying to find them. THanks for the tip. It certainly looks like it could be him!

Wel, I finnaly found him. He was murdered in LA in 1928 and I was able to dig through newspaper archives and at least I have something. He still isn't popping on on the 1920 census and I still can't find his parents. In fact my entire family has been dead end after dead end.

Line 26 - Fillipo Rubino - born 1895 - Possible manifest but is lined out. Traveling with other Rubino's the same age as him, all lined out also.
