Zerallo/Zorillo - Torino? Avellino? - Please help me

Postby jenz » 02 Aug 2007, 02:27

Hi,
My great grandfather Domenico Zerallo was born in 1882. It appears he couldn't read or write so there are several variations in spelling of his last name. The immigration record (which I think but I am not 100% sure is his), US census, and his WWI draft card show him as Zerallo. My grandfather's birth certificate lists his last name as Zorrillo, but almost all of the family goes by Zeralli.
I think I found his immigration record which shows him sailing from Belgium to the US in 1902. This lists his last residence as Torino (hard to read but I think that is what it says) and states that he had a brother in New York on Mulberry Street.
Once here, he settled in Paterson, NJ and married Elizabetta Pescatore who was originally from Avellino.
If anyone has any information about the Zerallo/Zorrillo families in Italy, it would be greatly appreaciated.

maybe the right surname is ZIROLLO... I believe he born in Bellizzi, Avellino, IT.. IF this record is right:

WWII a Domenico Zirollo married at Elizabeth, Paterson, Paissac, NJ:

Yes, that's them. Great information.

I think one major problem that we are running into in our search is that he couldn't read or write so there are so many variations in the spelling. The last couple of generations have gone by Zeralli, but officially my grandfather's birth certificate says Zorillo.

Thanks so much

oh.. yes, this is a common problem for italian descendants.. the surname variations spelling, but I believe that the WWII draft registration card is right, and the right italian spell is ZIROLLO.. regards, suanj

Once here, he settled in Paterson, NJ and married Elizabetta Pescatore
who was originally from Avellino.

for reference,
the 1902 manifest
indicates married?
