Peter, Can you tell me where to find this information? My great grandfather was Francesco Ricci. My mother named my sister Riccelle, so we could call her Ricci, which she has been all her life, although we pronounce it Ricky.
I don't think Peter is around now, so I'll risk speaking for him.
He is probably referring to the wonderful book, "Our Italian Surnames" by Joseph G. Fucilla. It is currently out of print, but used copies often surface on Amazon and ebay. I think it is very intereting, and has many uncommon and even extinct Italian surnames.
There is also the "Dictionary or American Family Names" by Patrick Hanks, which is crazy expensive but has many common Italians. This book is also searchable if you subscribe to Ancestry.com.
And never forget the Italian phone book. It won't give meanings, but often reveals geographic origins.
