Casaretti or Casaretto in Chiavari area

Post by hcoene1 »

My maternal great grandfather, Nicola Casaretto or Casaretti came to Rochester, NY in 1869 from Chiavari, Italy. He had married Louisa Vacari also in 1869 (location not known). Louisa's mother was Thersa carsa, father was Jake Vacari. Nicola's brother Antonio came a few years later. Both brothers were or became candy makers in Rochester...very successfully. Nicola was born 10 Jan 1852 and Louisa 20 Oct 1852. Nicola and Antonio's parents were Luigi and Casaretti (o) and Katherine Sanguiri. abs.All name spellings are somewhat up for grabs!

I am traveling to Chiavari the first week of November 2007 to research this. I need help! I see on one of the area maps that there is a hamlet Casaretti, only a few kmtrs from Chiavari.

Any help with this research or any help with Chiavari would be so greatly appreciated.

Ciao Hcoene1,

it's only for curiosity but have you tried to search and ask for the naturalization documents for your ancestors?
In 1930 Census they declared to be naturalized and maybe in the declaration you can find the right place of origin....
I've sent you a PM, did you read it?

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all of your help. I had the 1911 manifest and it is where I found out the real name, Casaretto, vs. all the other ones that became legal in the USA (Casaretti, Casarietti, Casarett). This openned me up to all the other names which were likewise changed or misspelled). My Italian heritage is so rich and I am so proud of it.

I still have had no luck with the original manifests for Nicola (1869) and Antonio (1887). I also found that Antonio married a Margaret Vauhan in 1872 but I do not know where. I have questions on her last name as well THOUGH I KNOW IT DOES BEGIN WITH A V.

The children of Antonia were: Louis, David, Theresa, George, and Virginia - all born in Italy while the last John was born in the US.

Thanks so much
Tom
