Francisco or Francesco VERDI

Postby Chinook » 22 Sep 2007, 14:55

Hi, my name is Richard and I am new to this forum.

My wife and I just returned from a trip to Italy. My wife thought it would be interesting to trace back her Italian ancestry and possibly locate some distant cousins in Venice. However, for this spur-of-the-moment, last-minute trip we had not had time to do any research.

My wife’s grandmother, Aldema VERDI was born in Canada (probably in Montreal) in 1904. She was the daughter of Francisco or Francesco VERDI who was apparently somehow related to the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi. Francisco’s wife, Rosanna THIFAULT, died giving birth to Aldema. Left with two other children and no wife, Francisco decided to go back to Venice Italy, leaving behind little Aldema to the care of the doctor who assisted in her delivery.

One of Aldema’s brothers (possibly named Jim) may have come back to western Canada and, we were told, had contacted Aldema.

When her father died, Aldema already had married and had children. She was notified of the death and asked to travel to Italy to claim her inheritance. As she was very poor, she could not come up with enough money for the trip and her inheritance was donated to the nuns.

Any information on this Francisco or Francesco VERDI or Jim VERDI would be much appreciated.

Richard

Elizabeth,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Forgive my ignorance, but where would I find information about the ship manifests? Can I safely assume they were ships sailing from Italy to North America?

Thanks,

Richard

If you want to find relatives still in Italy with your surname, you can use Pagine Bianche which is a telephone directory.

Also, the Family History Center does have microfilm for the town of Venice. You can try to look up Francesco's birth record. On the microfilm, you can find copies of the birth, marriage, and death records of your ancestors.

Do you have any information on Aldema? Was her last named changed when she was living with the Doctor or did she use Verdi? I was trying to find her in the 1911 Canadian Census.

I do hope some of this information helps with your search.

Elizabeth...........

Will you go back and edit your post with the looooooooong link.

It is causing the page to distort and hard to read. Since you provided the correct link in the next post, you can probably just eliminate most of the letters in the wrong link and it will cause the page to correct. Hard to read everything, otherwise.

Thanks...........

Trish,

Thank you, I think that this is the one! I will most likely be able to locate additional information based on this.

I can't figure out how you were able to decipher these census records! These pictures seem impossible to read to me. You must have a lot of experience.

Thanks again,

Richard

Trish,

I missed the question at the end of your message. Adlema kept the name Verdi as she was not legally adopted by the doctor. She subsequently got married to Alexandre Grondines. They had for children, Carmen (my wife's mother), Cécile, Marie-Claire, Jeannine and Alexandre. When Alexandre (father) passed away she married Georges Lévesque and they had 4 children, René, Laurier, Fleurette and Colette.

Aldema and George rest at the "Repos Saint-François d'Assise" cemetary in Montreal (http://www.rsfa.ca/).

Cemetary search results for Concession = 0358 Section = 03R page 1:

NOM DÉFUNT NOM CONJOINT NAISSANCE DÉCÈS MÈRE PÈRE SECTION* CONCESSION

Hi Richard,

Great death information! Keep us posted to how you make out with the research. Remember, everyone on the forum is here to help and it's always teamwork that gets the job done!:)

Now I have another question. Do you know the name of the family that Adlema was living with? I found a possible 1911 Canadian census, however, I need another set of eyes. And the spelling of Adlema's name is off, but it could be her for she is listed as an "adopted daughter". She is listed on line 39 and it looks like the year of birth is really 1906.

However, I need another set of eyes and few other opinions.

Trish,

Right again,

The name Bonin was mentioned by one of Aldema's daughters. She was not sure which one was the natural mother. Aldema was never adopted legally.

Your research also shows that Frederico did not go back to Italy immediately after the birth of Aldema.

Thank you very much again,

Richard
