That is probably the americanized spelling. I have seen variant spellings used among the family.

I visited the cemetery today and Vito's headstone spells it CAGGIANELLO.

He came over here from Castelfranco in 1899. many of them settled in Bridgeport, CT but I don't understand yet how they are all connected.

This is what I found so far. These are comunes with castelfranco in name and first one seems closest.

Castelfranco di Sopra

CAGNOLI Chitignano, Arezzo, Tuscany
there is also "Scagnoli" which may be incorrect.

CAGNACCI Ortignano Raggiolo, Arezzo Tuscany
*******************************************************
Castelfranco di Sotto, Pisa, Toscana

Castelfranco Emilia,Modena, Emilia Romagna

Castelfranco in Miscano, Benevento,Campania

Castelfranco Veneto,Treviso, Veneto

If you could narrow down province that would be great.

This link will show where the name is present in Italy today. Type in the last name where it says cognome and press the red arrow.
