Surname Perazzo?

Postby adifresco » 02 Nov 2007, 23:40

I'm trying to find more information about my great-grandmother Sabina DiFresco (maiden name Perazzo), and from what I've gathered, she was born in the U.S. from Italian parents. (That's what my father told me and what it lists on her husband's naturalization records) However, I'm uncertain about her date of birth and her parent's names. Also not sure about the spelling of the last name.

I have found an Ellis Island immigration record from 1913 that lists her, along with her mother Giovanna Bianco, and sister Theresa. Not sure if these are actually my relatives are not, because I'm almost certain Sabina was born in New York. (Maybe they were just making a trip to Italy?) I have also found U.S. census records from 1910 and 1920 that lists Giovanna, Sabina, and Theresa living with Francesco Perazzo, Giovanna's husband's father. However, I have found no record for her husband's name and I'm not even sure this is the right family. Can anyone help?

Forgot to add, her husband's naturalization records list her birth as June 1904 in New York.

Can you post the manifest and the census records that you found? And you didn't say what Sabina's husbands first name was and if he was born in Italy or US.

Elizabeth

Here's a 1907 Manifest
and here's a 1913 Manifest.
I really am not sure if that's the right family.

Unfortunately I don't have the census links because I'm no longer a member of ancestry.com but I do have info from them:

1910 US Census
18th Ward, Brooklyn, Kings, NY
82 Debevoise Ave

Frank PERAZZO, 63 yrs old (b abt 1847), married for 40 years (m abt 1870)
immig 1920 Na (naturalized), rents
- wife Tessie, 67 yrs old (b abt 1843), 3 children born, 2 children living
immig 1896
- daughter-in-law Jennie, 40 yrs old (b abt 1870), Widow, 3 children born, 3 children living,
immig 1907, Baker - Factory
- grandson Frank, 10 yrs old (b abt 1900), immig 1907
- grandaughter Tessie, 8 yrs old (b abt 1902), immig 1907
- grandaughter Sabina, 6 yrs old (b abt 1904), immig 1907

1920 US Census
Brooklyn District 13, Kings, NY
82 Debevoise Place

Frank PERAZZO, 73 yrs old, Widower, immig 1903, Na 1910, rents
- grandson Frank, 20 yrs old, immig 1906, Pa (filed 1st papers)
- grandaughter Theresa, 18 yrs old, immig 1906 Al (alien)
- grandaughter Sadie, 16 yrs old, immig 1906 Al

Again, I'm not sure that's the right family... this is the only one I'm certain about:

1930 US Census
Bronx Co. New York
Fresco, John A, head, age 33, birthplace: Italy
Sabina, wife, age 24, birthplace: New York (but both parents born in Italy)
John A. Jr, son, age 9 months

Also I recently received naturalization records for Giovanni (John) DiFresco from the National Archives. These records also say his wife Sabina was born in New York. This confirms what my father has told me, and he is the only living person who would have any clue. Sabina's Social Security Death Index record lists her birth date as 11 Jun 1905. (Alternatively, Giovanni's naturalization lists Sabina's birth date as June 1904) How would I go about getting a birth certificate or some other records if I don't know any more information? Basically I have no idea where to go from here.

This is possibly Frank's death info.

Perazzo Francesco 87 y Mar 5 1938 4970 Kings P620

The manifest says that Giovanna is leaving her father Cesare in Italy and joining her father in law in the US. Is it possible her husband died in Italy?

If this is the correct record there are naturalization notations on the manifest for both Francesco and Sabina, but not for Theresa. This may be the record.

Perazzo Frank Peter 1943 1409 395034 P620

Couldn't find anything for Sabina.

Children's ages are right for the 2nd trip. She leaves her brother, Pasquale in Italy. Husband can't be dead because he paid the passage. Where is he?

Exactly... I have found no record of him ever immigrating or even his name. I'm not sure why he wouldn't join his wife, children, and parents in the U.S.

I was first thinking army or a physical disability that made it impossible for him to immigrate. But why didn't she list him as her contact in Italy?

Possibly in prison? That's the only other thing I can think of.

According to Giovanni's naturalization records, they were married on Sep 30 1928 in New York, so none of those dates match up. As far as names, the only thing I know is Sabina Perazzo... I have also seen it spelled Perazzio and Terrazzio in a very basic family tree I have from a long time ago, although those don't seem to be ordinary Italian surnames. No other information though.

Mary Jo,

In reference to the 1913 manifest - if Sabina had been born in US wouldn't they have put a stamp by her name or across her name that said non alien or non immigrant? I know we've both seen that on other manifests on different threads, especially for children. Born in the US then?

The 1907 manifest is correct. All three children traveling with their mother Giovanna Bianco - Francesco, Teresa and Sabina (nat. numbers next to two of their names, one being Sabina's). So it looks like she was born in Italy.

1913 manifest is correct also - traveling to father in law Francesco Perazzo and if you look where Sabinas name is it's included with additional DeFrise (DeFresco) next to her name and below father in laws name.

1910 and 1920 census would be correct. 1910 census Giovanna (Jenny) is a widow.

What was Giovanna's husbands name?

That is one thing I'm unsure about... I haven't been able to find a record of him at all. I'm still not completely convinced that this is my family. Simply because I have several legitimate sources that say Sabina was born in New York. The naturalization records for her husband, Giovanni, say she was born in New York. The 1930 U.S. census says she was born in New York. Plus my father is pretty certain she was born in New York. It doesn't seem like someone's birthplace would be so easily overlooked, but I guess it's possible. Maybe her siblings were born in Italy and it was just assumed that she was also?

Does Sabina have a brother named Francesco (Frank), a sister named Teresa (Tessie) and her mother's name is Giovanna Bianco Perazzo? If so, then I think you have the correct family.

I'm thinking that Giovanna's husband died in Italy and that's why she came by herself with the 3 children (passage paid by father-in-law) to come live with her father-in-law and mother-in-law in america. There was a lot of deaths from flu epidemics and cholera in those days. My great grandfather and two of his sons died from it all within a 4 year period.

I'm going to check one other thing.
