Laura: Do you have any idea what year (estimate) that your grandparents were born. It is easier to begin if you can make certain assumptions about birth years. Do you know if they stayed in New York there whole lives? Any idea what year your grandmother died?

A little more info and I am sure we can get you started.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Here are two possible manifests for Samuele Gentile.

1906 - line 13 - going to his son Gennaro in NY
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0013
1899 - line 12 - going to his cousin Pasquale Aiello in NY (I believe this is the same person as the 1906 manifest)
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0012

There is a third manifest for 1903 but when it comes up it's the wrong manifest.

Can you give any additional information about Sam? His wife's full name (maiden), childrens names, ages, if born in Italy or US. Sam's brothers or sisters full names etc. The more detail you can give, the easier it will be for people on the forum to jump in and help.

Regards
Elizabeth

Sam can also be the Americanized version of Salvatore. There are many Salvatore Gentiles listed in NY in the census. Elizabeth is right. You need to give us more information. Both last names are common in many parts of Italy. An interesting thread on the name Esposito.
