looking for my ancestors from italy

Postby justinfrombklyn » 04 Dec 2007, 03:14

my name is justin salvadore i don't know my birth father but what i would like to find out is where my great great grandfather came from in italy all i know is he was from naples, italy but i don't know what city or town.

i have a 87 year old grandmother vincenza who gave me alot of information about the family.. her maiden name is urgola

her father was antonio urgola her mother was mary lauri... i searched ancestry.com websites and all i could find is his world war 1 draft card.. and all i could find from her is her census report stating she was 10 in 1910.. antonio's father was giovanni urgola.. his brothers was joseph and carmine and his sister was caroline.. his mother was elizabeth who died in italy.. i found the ellis island record of his father coming to ellis island in 1912 at 70 years old.. with his granddaugher giovanna.. my grandmother confirmed this.. it says he departed from naples but thats all i know...

and my great grandmother Mary's parents were biagio and vincenza and all i know from them is they were from Naples too.

what i would like to find out is the records from Italy if there is any possible and records about my great great grandparents Giovanni and Elizabeth and my great grandfather antonio..

if anyone can find this information out it will help me alot in my research

thank you

Since you have defined your research goals (which is great, thanks), here is my advice to you justinfrombklyn:

As vj stated in your other post, you could rent the microfilms from your ancestors town and research through them or since you do have quite a bit of info already, you can write to Italy directly and request the actually request the acts (birth, marriage, etc) directly.

If you word your request correctly, you should be able to get copies of the acts which would include parents names and approximate age, possible grandparents names and whether or not they were living at the time and the names of the witnesses who attended the registration. Of course, you need to correctly identify the place of birth first to write to the proper commune.

Hi,
I belong to this family, too and I confirm that the exact neme is Urgolo or D'Urgolo. It is from Conca della Campania (CE).

Hi Justin,

I have also researched my ancestors, who were from Naples. But it's important that you know whether they are from Naples the province or Naples the city. My ancestors were from the center of Naples, so I was able to write the Stato Civile office there for the records - I had no success by email so I sent letters by regular mail to which they did respond in about a month. I then wanted further info and in fact, I went directly to the Naples Stato Civile office in October and saw the records for myself! (it was pretty cool, I have to say) :)

The FHC can be very helpful and relatively easy (much easier than flying to Naples for sure!) but they do not have all the sections of Naples (called quartieri). But if you write to Naples (the city), you need the year of birth (if you have an exact one, that's better, because it's a big office and they don't have the time to search several years like the smaller offices).

You must write the letters in Italian. There are several online translation websites you can use. Let me know if this info is helpful and what else you would like to know about requesting records from Naples. If you know that your ancestors are from the city, I can give you the address to write to.

Good luck Justin!

Hey Justin,

I think I can help you here.

I just looked at Caroline's passenger manifest. It says her husband's father lived in Napoli & even gives an address (ironically this is exactly how I found my ancestors in Naples).

I think your people are from the city, but I can't read the exact address. If you got a copy of the manifest from ancestry.com, you can expand it and maybe read the street name or address. There is a page on the Naples gov't website that will tell you what quarter of Naples they were from the address. Suanj knows the website. I will look for it.

Once you know which quarter or section they were from (which you really need to get records from Naples), you can write directly to the Stato Civile office:

Servizio Stato Civile del Comune di Napoli
2° traversa dell'Epomeo, Parco Quadrifoglio
80126 Napoli (NA)
ITALY

Let me know if you have any other questions.
