Ellis Island records pre- 1890? ...Bottini

Postby meticulousmobile » 06 Dec 2007, 18:01

The earliest date you can pick on the ellis island search is in the 1890s, but I believe my great-great grandfather Francesco Bottini came earlier, as my great grandfather, John Angelo Bottini was born in Boston June 17, 1886. We believe Francesco was born in Parma, or somewhere nearby. Is there any way to search earlier records of emigration? Also, will Boston City Hall have birth records from that era so I can confirm the parents' names? Thanks everyone! ----- Matt

ok, so I think I posted this in the wrong forum, sorry! I checked the immigration forum and saw Castle Gardens, checked that, and found a Francesco Bottini, arrived Mar 11, 1885, which works, age 33, which works, and Port Havre, which works too. There wasn't any other info, or manifest pic or anything, so I can't be sure. It lists destination as 2764, but I don't know what their code means. Any way to get more info from this site?

The earlier manifests didn't list towns usually. Rare to get more then name, age, sex, and number of pieces of luggage!

Here is the manifest:

http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/7500 ... inibp5.jpg

He is passenger 176 and I believe it states he is going to California...does that make sense?

It was only after Ellis Island had been opened...1906 I believe...that additional information was required on the manifests.

Wish there was something more definitive for you.

OMG, you're unreal! The spelling is way off, but the kids names are all right, and I knew he was married to a Pasqualina who died young, and we thought her last name was bertuche. Thank you so much!!!

Matt,
That's terrific that we have the correct family for you!
In quite a few cases the birth/death records on the the
MA Archive site Search MA Archives can be found on the NEHGS
site as actual images (thru 1910).
If you find any more possible records that may belong to
your family in an archive search, please let us know.
A few of us have a subscription to NEHGS.
New England Historical Genealogical Society
The MA Archive site also explains how you can order those records
- or view them in person.

Thanks Valarie, that's great! It's too bad nothing shows a town in Italy in the old records, I'll have to keep searching. I've heard that Francesco was "Parmese", or "Parmesan" as they used to call him, but saying he was from Parma is probably like when they said that my grandmothers mother was from Genoa, when she was actually from Cichero nearby. If I can find the town, LDS film will be the next step.

Re: Ellis Island records pre- 1890? ...Bottini Location?

Postby meticulousmobile » 10 Dec 2007, 02:42

I'm still stuck, no living relatives know the location he came from in Italy. The cognome search shows alot of Bottinis, mostly in the Northern regions. but nothing revealing. I need some advice on how to find out. HELP!! :?

Do you know if he naturalized? If so, this paperwork could reveal the town of origin......

Not sure if he was. Is there an online database I can search for his name on naturalization papers?

Matt,
Finding a town of origin can be a challenge.
Since no one in the family has any of Francesco's
old documents, that avenue is apparently closed.
He wouldn't have any military registrations in the
US since he was born in the 1850's.
Manifests before the mid-1890's generally didn't
list the town of origin.
If you can find any relatives that may have joined
him in the US, their records may help.
Many of us have had the same difficulty, I didn't
find our town of origin until a relative found an
old newspaper clipping stating my g-grandfather was
returning to Donnici to visit relatives!
Perhaps an obituary for Francesco?
Valarie

One search you could try...
Look for Bottini on Ellis Island, see if anyone
was joining your Francesco in MA.
If you can make a connection, you may have
your town.

If this is your family in 1910,
it may be worth looking at Francesco’s
brother-in-law’s possible records…

Definitely is, thanks! I'll look into it. No luck yet on the huge list of Bottinis on ellis island, most went to CA or NY.
