locating death certificate

Postby nfig1 » 19 Dec 2007, 07:13

I have a difficult case with my great-grandfather, Louis Figone. His birth certificate was lost in the SF earthquake and fire of 1906. His last known address was somewhere in Contra Costa county in 1916. To prove who his dad was and thus my link to Italy, I believe I could use his death certificate which normally shows the names of parents. However, there is no trace of Louis after the 1910 census and 1916 draft registration card. I guess I could go county to county trying to find his death certificate. There are 3 likely candidates: SF, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties. Then again, he could have gone back to Italy for all I know. Is there a better way? Thank you!

Hi

There are several Figones buried in the Italian Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo Co. Ca. including these 2 who seem to be buried in the same grave

Luigi Figone 1866-1933
Aurelia Figone 1899-1911

Colma is a cemetery town and is just South of San Francesco. Perhaps you could call or write and inquire.

Here's the address & Telephone #

Italian Cemetery (AKA) Societa' Italiana Di Mutua

San Mateo County
California USA
Postal Code: 94014
Phone: 650-755-1511

I guess I kinda knew that one Louis was older and one younger than you were looking for.

I was just suggesting that the Italian Cemetery would be a good place to check.

Have you reviewed www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/sfranvit.htm for pre and post 1906 vital data for San Francisco County? =Peter=

Yes, I have looked there thank you. I think I found a way to get the information I need in order to obtain the certificate. First, I will go to the Social Security Hearing office nearby and ask for a certified copy of his Social Security number application. Second, I will a request a Search for Information About a Death of an Individual. With that I should have enough information to obtain the death certificate and perhaps a "delayed" birth certificate (via court order) as well, since his birth certificate was lost in the 1906 fire.
