Search for a given name

Postby Gram » 24 May 2003, 00:30

My husband's uncle died at age 4 in 1919.
We have not found the birth certificate. He was born somewhere in Iowa.
We have found three spellings of his given name:
Gerdo.....on certificate of death
Gerardo....on cemetery record book
Girddo.....on his gravestone
Is there a correct Italian spelling for this name?
The parents came from Southern Italy.

if they came in thru ellis island go thru their records and get correct spelling of parent (father's name) since mothers never lost their dientity and entered in single name. Please advise if this is a problem. I suspect Gerardo is the family name but thats speculation on my part. This rerquires research on yhour part. EWhen you find a record of entry into the USDA as an immigrant go to ships manifest and see where they were destined and where they came from. Peter

Sorry Peter, by given name I meant first name. I know the surname, which is Lonetto.

Thanks Peter. Gerardo will be the one I record, with the others as variations, until I find the birth record. :?

Good move since the variations are all based on both like Gerardino and geraldino and stuff like that. Peter
