Can anyone help me with the Pasano family heritage?

Postby jpnelson » 05 Jan 2008, 22:18

My 83 year old grandmother has told the family that she believes we are "French". Due to the young death of her mother leaving all of the 9 children behind that wound up separated and some in orphanages, I don't believe my grandmother ever knew "factually" what the family heritage was at all. I always thought my grandmother and some of my siblings looked Italian. Upon looking at the records I could find, it appears I was right. I think my great-grandfather left great confusion by filling out various census forms by saying he was Canadian on one, From New York on another, and from France on another. Maybe he couldn't read well? Anyway, my grandmother is Adele Pasano born in 1924, and my great Grandfather is George J Pasano born 1888 or 1889- married to Vera. I tried all day to find out what his father's name is and checked passenger lists, but only wound up frustrated. I just want to know, and it would really answer alot of questions in my family. Are we of Italian descent? and I would really like to know what George Pasano's father's name is.

Wow..... You are truly amazing.... Thank you so much... I spent over 10 hours with a hot laptop burning a square on my legs, and I never thought that the names and spellings would change and morph over time. I thought names were permanent. Things must have been a little more lax w/ details? So if everyone is from Montreal Canada - French must be right.... And my grandma must have either imagined an uncle Nelson or maybe Alfred or Arthur were nicknamed Nelson.

Huge questions answered!!! I'd better call my father and cancel the big Italian festival I thought we would be having. He was looking forward to the cuisine!! Thank you so much, I am in debt to you! I am an artist, and if there is ever anything I can do for you - please do not hesitate!! -Jen

Jen, you are very welcome!
We're so glad we could help :D !
Spelling on census records especially can be pretty awful - it
depended on who was giving the information and whether or
not the census enumerator could understand them.
Your ancestors may have spoken French at home.
There is a chance that neither Pasano or Pasono is the original
family name - your g-grandparents may have 'Americanized' it.
You may have a g-uncle Nelson, he could be one of George's
sister's husbands...
Your family can be traced back to Canada - try posting what you
have over on our Canadian forum. Several researchers over there
are very familiar with the Quebec records.
Canadian Forum
You may want to order some Vital Records from NY - these may have
your g-grandmother Lena's maiden name on them.
You never know - you may find that Italian connection!
