Ciliberti (or Ciliberto)

Postby kmaldo » 12 Jan 2008, 04:21

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can help - my great grandmother was Amalia Ciliberti (perhaps Ciliberto), born in the 1890s (around 1893 or 1894) but I am unable to find any information on where she came from. My mother's aunt said she was from Avellino, but I have checked Paginebianche.com and there don't seem to be any individuals from Avellino with this last name (either version).

The death certificate says "Mildred (or Amalia)" but Mildred doesn't sound like an Italian name and I have checked ancestry.com, to no avail.

My GGM's parents' names per her marriage certificate were Giuseppe Ciliberti (another says Ciliberto) and Luisa Salandra.

Perhaps someone can find a record on-line which I have missed or overlooked that shows her place of origin. Thank you in advance!

There is a mildred Ciliberti born 1905 who died in 1977 in Atlantic NJ and if so you can go to www. SSDI.rootsweb.com and click on the SS-5 five column for a form letter requesting her original social security application which will furnish vital data and may include her town of origin in Italy (sometimes they just put in Italy) but it will cost about $27.00.

If you do not believe that this is your Mildred Ciliberti then determine when and where she arrived inthe USA as an immigrant and whther she was married at the time or had a maiden name which Italian women never lose. =Peter=

Have you found her manifest? I took a quick look. but didn't come up with anything. Can you provide a few more details> What was her husband's name? Did she have any other siblings who immigrated? Where did they first settle? Were they married in Italy or the US. Is it possible she came as a child? These answers could help narrow the search.

PS Mildred is not really Italian, but it was very popular with Italian immigrants for some reason. My aunt was Carmella, but she called herself Mildred.
