Surnames: Iazzetta(Carmine), Coviello(Vincenza)

Postby BrookLynne » 24 Jan 2008, 22:56

Hello, Very new at this, so any help is very appreciated. Looking for my grandparents, Carmine Iazzetta from Rome and Vincenza Coviello from Naples. Came to NY 1900-1924. Sometime after the 1930 census, moved to Brooklyn. Many thanks for any help. BrookLynne

Hi and welcome to the forum,

A few questions. Since they were from different parts of Italy, can I assume they met and married in the US? Do you have any idea of when they immigrated? Where? Names of siblings? Children? Any further info you can provide will help in the search.

Not sure if you already have all their census records.
Is this one correct?

Thank you Misbiz and VJ for such quick replay. My grandparents married in Italy, Vincenza was "adopted" by Carmines mother to become a servent in Rome. Carmine fell in love with her and eloped to USA. (or so the story goes) Yes VJ, the 1920 census info is correct. That's them alright. I know there was also a 1930 census on them, but then no further info. I lost the last of my family, my Auntie LaLa (Laura) May 2007 (in my arms) very devestating. So as a way of hopefully healing, I'm trying to do the Family history, etc. I get lost in the EllisIsland site as not very computer-savy, so finding this site has been a blessing. Thank you again

Sorry Misbris for the misspell...no idea date of immigration but it was to NY as I have briefly seen the 1920 and 1930 census. With lack of computer skills, could not find that info again. They never spoke of sibs; apparently Grandpa Carmine left Italy when he married Grandma Vincenza. Also know there was a 1924 Passenger List notation of them returning from a visit(?) to Italy with son Adolfo and that's about all I know. Again many thanks for any and all help Misbris and VJ

VJ, yes the 1930 census info is mostly correct. I never understood why Grandma was listed as "Nancy" here as it was Vincenza. My Aunt Marie changed her first name from Raffaella to Marie (not Mary) when she married Uncle Louie Iucci (kept Raffaella as middle name) My Mom, Emma somehow became Elinor, but I know her as Elaine/Emma. Go figure, almost reminds me of the Beatles Lyrics "..but everyone knew her as Nancy" LOL..

I ordered the naturalization files for my
family - they're terrific!

This site has been such a + distraction and I really appreciate your help. Gratziella, ma Bella. BrookLynne

Oh my, BrookLynn!

We're so glad you're here :D !

No doubt everyone is having the same problem
trying to find your ship manifest.
We'll find it, it may take awhile.
Names beginning in 'I' often got transcribed
as a 'J' or 'S' ...
Your grandmother Vincenza should be under her
maiden name, it would be unusual for her to travel
under her husbands's name...

A census for 1910 is also turning out to be a challenge.

The site most of us use for Ellis Island is the
one step gold form. It's a very flexible search engine for
Ellis Island. It's free and only requires you to register.

Also, do you have all of the family's obituaries?
Sometimes there are clues to be found in them.
We can help you look, but would need your Aunts'
married names.

Valarie
