help with family,please

Postby coinnut » 07 Feb 2008, 01:26

Hello,
Let me introduce myself, my name is "coinnut" and I started working on
my family history since I saw Roots in 1977.
I have reached several dead ends and difficult lines to follow.
Since I got online and joined ancestry.com and looked at
many other internet sources,
I began to trace several friends genealogies and have a great time doing it.
Its fun giving someone a gift of their family.
I traced a black family back to the 1850s,followed a family to the Mayflower and other "common" genealogies that weren't common
I am presently working on an Italian family, not my first, that I am having trouble with. In searching through internet sites I came across
this forum and was impressed with the posts I read
and was hoping someone could offer assistance.
The family is of:

Pietro Savino 1800-1902
married Catherine
children:Luke,Joseph,Frank,Vito
and Rocco 1824-1849,Nicholas 1890-1946
Nicholas married Julia 1983-1916
They were all from Grumo,Appula,in Bari.
Dont know when they came over.
Nicholas came to NY and lived in the Bronx, maybe with his parents.
Nicholas is the line I am tracing.

The obvious problem is Pietro and his sons birth year
and I cant find the family anywhere, they should appear
in the 1910,1900,maybe the 1880 census and immigration records
but I cant verify any records I find.

If anyone can offer any help or advice it would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I am having a problem following your birth and death dates. Are you saying Pietro was 102 years old? Do you know for sure if Pietro immigrated? Do you know Catherine's maiden name? There are loads of possibilities in the immigration records, but the dates don't fit.

Thanks for responding
Yes,those dates were from records compiled by Pietro's granddaughter.
They were read to me over the phone by her grandson, age 45.
Nicholas dates works out well with his children's age.
It looks as if Pietro had nicholas at age 90!
I am pretty sure Pietro died in the bronx,NY

thanks again

Located this on the Italian Genealogy Group site's death records.
Savino Nicholas 49 y Jun 25 1946 6322 Bronx 1896 - 1897

And from IGG's marriage records.
Groom--Savino Nicolo Jan 29 1911 Manhattan 3160
Bride--Camastro Guilo (Giulia?) Jan 29 1911 3160

Might be worth checking.

BTW, if you find out what kind of grape juice Pietro liked let us know.

Nicholas married Julia Camastro I guess there the same.
What is IGG?

coinnut,

interesting 1910 census
edit: added census detail

- immig 1902
- iceman, shop, employer
Aunt Annie Camastrie 40 (abt 1870) IT
- widow
- 2 children
Cousin Julia Camastrie 18 (abt 1892) IT
- single

edit: added
related manifest for Aunt?
possible 1906 manifest Anna Camastra Savino

special inquiry page

It may be easier to start with Nicolo's family in
1920, 1930 and work backwards.
Do you have his children's names?
Thanks, Valarie

Morning Valarie! :D

Nice find on the 1910 census. Here's what appears to be Julia's death info from IGG which verifies her approximate yob on the census.
Savino Julia 23 y Apr 13 1916 2629 Bronx 1892 - 1893

Thanks everyone, for the info and doc,I knew this forum was special.
For the Camasrto family I know little but there is Anna Savino B.@1910
I think still alive, she is the daughter of Nicholas Savino ,mabey I
can talk to her to get info on the Camasrto family.I will also
follow the leads that your info provided.

I tried looking for the 1920/30 census but between the handwritting
and unfamiliarity with Italian names,I couldnt be sure of census/Imm records.

Nicholas's Savino married Guilo Camastro 1911 and had Rose 1912-95
and Anna, who might still be alive.
Dont know anything else of this family yet.

Would appreciate any further help you can offer,
Everyone has been great, thank you all.
