Researching: Riolo - descendants from Piana Dei Greci

Postby rictor_riolo » 17 Feb 2008, 01:27

My grandfather, Salvatore Riolo came over to America in 1911 from Piana Dei Greci (now called Piana Degli Albanese). He joined his brothers John, Andrea, Giorgio and Victor in California.

Victor was killed working on the South Pacific Railroad in The only info I have on his parents (my great grandparents) is that their names were Pietro Riolo and Antoinette Lascari. Is there any way I can do any research on them? [UPDATE: I was able to find their birth, marriage, and death dates at long last!] I have a huge family tree that I made on Ancestry.com and I would like to fill in the gaps. Is there any genealogy database I can access from that part of Sicily? One of the brothers, Nicolo Riolo, remained in Sicily and was an Italian General in the Army during WWII. He was captured by the British and was in a prison war camp for 6 years.

Giorgio Riolo was murdered in 1932 in Little Rock, Arkansas, by a traveling companion. Hi brother John had to travel to Arkansas to identify the body.

The picture below is Salvatore with his wife, Antonina Carbone. They had three children. Ann, Peter, and John. John is my father and he is 84 years old. Because he had a volatile relationship with his father, Salvatore, no family information from his side of the family was handed down. Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

This may be Salvatore's manifest. I don't know if you have it. Leaves father Pietro in Italy and going to brother, Georgio in California. Can you confirm if this is your Salvatore?

Piana dei Greci is now called Piana degli Albanesi, in the province of Palermo Sicily.

LDS has films of civil records for birth, death, marriages etc. 1820 through 1902
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... o+civile++

nati=birth
morti=death
matrimoni=marriage

Find your nearest Family History Center (FHC).
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

Write down the film numbers with descriptions that you'd like to view. Go to your FHC and order. Cost per film is about $5.50 USD and takes about 4 weeks to receive.

Hope this helps.

There is a great rootsweb group you can join by sending an email titled "Join" to:

ITALY-ARBERESH-request@rootsweb.com

There are quite a few members who have lots of copied Piana degli Albanisi records. It is the current name for your town.

You should contact Joni Saunders on that list especially!!

Hey everyone. You all did such a fine job trying to help me. I discovered my roots through a historian of the Piana Dei Greci area (now Piana Degli Albanese). She lives in Sacramento and is a member of the Aerebesh club there. She's been doing this for 15 years. Leita is name and her website is: http://contessaentellina.net. If any of you need help learning your Piana Dei Greci ancestors, I suggest emailing her immediately.

Rick,
Thanks for the compliment, however, Josie Plescia Vaughn is the "Historian" for Piana. She has transcribed all of the records that are on microfilm for Piana. Yes, all!! So there is so much information available for all families who immigrated from Piana. (Piana Dei Greci- Piana degli Albanesi). ( and Santa Cristina Gela) She continues to add more information on the immigrants and their family from Piana daily.
You can contact her through me
nospamLspoto@pacbell.net (remove the nospam)
I have done the same for Contessa Entellina and happy to share what I have.

Sincerely,
Leita
