HELLO!!! looking for the name Delazzaro

Postby rosa466 » 07 Mar 2008, 09:11

Good morning all, I am researching my family tree from Malta and came across the name DeLazzaro, has any one ever heard of this family?
Apparently it is not a Maltese name but I can not find out where they came from, the first record I have of them in Malta is in 1707. it could still be earlier.
I am finding very difficult to discover their origins , can any one help?
I also read about slaves being given the prefix De before the name of the master ie Maria De Lazzaro , slave of Lazzaro???

De Lazzaro/Di Lazzaro means "son of Lazzaro":
traces of this surname are in Mugello area( Tuscany) in the 1400 with a
Andrea di Lazzaro alias the "Buggiano" heir of Filippo of ser Brunellesco Lippi a great artist constructor of mechanical clocks, and also traces of this surname in Vasto town ( Chieti province) in 1600 with a Ermenegildo di Lazzaro.....

normally the italian in Malta was of south Italy, sicilian/calabrian origin especially.... franlky I don't know... but I believe that, because the more old record start from 1777> Cete Augustino Delazzaro
http://giacomocamilleri.blogspot.com/
ande because you have records from 1707, you can go back in Malta church records
Topic Malta - Church records

Titles The Adami collection, 1485-1868
Matrimoni in tutte le parrocchie dell'Isola [Malta], 1546-1719

Record of members, 1852-1854 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Malta Mission

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... umns=*,0,0
hoping of to find the first italian DeLazzaro immigrated in Malta ... it is very possible that the birthplace is mentioned in church records... it is a long search and need of much patience, but I believe that this is the first step....
only finding some record in the microfilms you have the possibility of to go in progress in your search in Italy ... .... in any case DI LAZZARO was and is present in Calabria in Cosenza area, and in Molise region, as also in Lazio region/Roma area as a well in Veneto region as DE LAZZERO( Longarone, Castellavazzo towns especially) ....
the DI or DE is no very important, because in the past was all DE, and after in the time with modern italian language the DE changed in DI in many regions.... so your ancestor maybe in Italy had one of this surname spell: LAZZARO, DI LAZZARO, DE LAZZARO
because Di/De Lazzaro however have origin from Lazzaro surname... regards, suanj

I believe that Mitolin is now Mytilene which is on the island of Lesvos in the Aegean Sea (Greek). This was once under Italian rule. The first link is supplied by Lesvos
http://www.lesvosonline.gr/Lesvos/Map/maps/maps.htm

The second link is a mapquest map that shows Mytilene with a red star relative to Italy.
http://europe.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp ... y=Mytilene

Maybe one of our historians on the forum can confirm my findings. If this is incorrect I'll edit my post.

suanj,

If I am not mistaken in Italian the prefixes :
DE, DI, DA (and its combinations) and DEI , or De' have different meanings when followed by a proper name, or by a surname.

Therefore, this must be considered by rosa 466 in her genealogical research.

suanj,

I am sorry but I am not sure I understand your Post.

You write: "De Lazzaro/Di Lazzaro means the son of Lazzaro." In Italian "DE" and "DI" have two different meanings. Which one?

Then you write: Andrea di Lazzaro, alias the "Buggiano", heir of Filippo of ser Brunellesco LIPPI??

Do you mean Filippo Brunellesco ? OR,
Do you mean Filippino LIPPI? etc. etc. I am confused!

Aether :?

Fillippo di ser Brunellesco ( meaning Filippo the son of Master Brunellesco)

THEN you write:
"Fiori di grano.

Amici piu' di prima saremo;

Amici piu' di prima da lontano".

abt:
DE/DI the general meaning is: son of/patronymic
DA the general meaning is: place-name( birthplace or residence place); litterally:came from ( exemple: Leonardo da Vinci; Vinci is the place-name)
DEI/DEGLI the general meaning is: of family/of descent or general heritage

"Andrea di Lazzaro, alias the "Buggiano", heir of Filippo of ser Brunellesco LIPPI??"

=

Andrea di Lazzaro ( also knew with "Buggiano" nickname), heir of Filippo of notable(ser=lord/notable) Brunellesco LIPPI;
I don't know if Filippo of Filippo of notable Brunellesco LIPPI, it was the son of Brunellesco Lippi or related in some other way...

suanj,

The POINT is that Filippo Brunellesco LIPPI was a clock maker, and at the time in Firenze he would NOT have been considered a "GREAT ARTIST". He made clocks, did the clock work. However, his most famous clocks were painted/decorated by well known artists.

FILLIPO BRUNELLESCO was a GREAT ARTIST and ARCHITECT . SEE the DUOMO in FiRENZE.

So, was FILIPPINO LIPPI a known ARTIST.

In addition, "ser" was generaly used for "Master", as for a "Craftsman" in the local dialect.

MY DEEP CONCERN:

Some information from Posts will later appear, in the Internet as being correct historical information, and also it ends up at WIKI without any DISCLAIMER! Sometimes being only SUBJECTIVE opinions!
"Buggiano" was NOT a Great Artist, as understood in Firenze at the time!

I assume that the name originally was given from the father first name, at a time before surnames where widely used? So in fact many De/Di lazzaro are not related, as there must have been many sons given their fathers name of Lazzaro.
the link with Lesvos is very interesting, thanks you for looking into this for me:)
Andrea di Lazzaro (Cavalcanti?) was born in the village of Buggiano, and became the adopted son and pupil of BRUNELLESCO. hence his nickname "Buggiano"
I take note that he may not have been known as a great artist at that time. I understand that many artist are said to be so, posthumously (some time after their death)

suanj,

It seems not clear that my concern is about 'subjective opinions' issued in the Forum, which afterwards are posted in the internet. And which, also finds its the way into WIKI.

To be quoted ad infinitum!!!

I am not concerned at all with this surname, or that surname, but very concerned about the absence of DISCLAIMERS in the posts transferred to the internet and to WIKI.

This automatic transfer of Posts is what I certainly do not agree with. It is necessary to modify this program, opinions issued in the Forum should remain only there. And , in clear English!
