How To Obtain My Grandfathers Birth Certificate

Postby imwormer » 11 Mar 2008, 22:16

Hello, Im looking to trace my Grandfathers roots and I would like to start with his birth certificate, because on his death certificate his MOTHER'S maiden name reads DiMarco??? now on his WW2 registration card he signed around 1942 to that he was born in "Camarta" Italy thats how it reads we believe its Cammarata (Sicily) and his birth date was 10-21-1891 and his name reads Lewis Di Marco, also we know from his WW1 registration card that he signed on 6-5-1917 he was 26 his date of birth reads 10-22-1890 and he was born in the Providence of Sicily. I would like to now how I could obtain his birth certificate and a certificate of faimly status??? and start there so i could see if he had any brothers and /or sisters, because on the 1910 Cencus he states he's staying with a BrotherIn-Law as the relationship to the person of head of faimly, and his name is spelled Louis De Marco (on the 1910 cencus). Any information on how to go about this on obtaining his Birth certificate and any other documents would be greatly appreciated. "Thanking You" Jim

This is a great link to a guide on doing Italian research published by the Family History Library: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... cestor.asp

You can find your closest family history library by going to www.familysearch.org. They have microfilm of your town, which you can rent:

That way, you can look through 1891 and 1890 to find him. Your other option is to write to the Ufficio Stato Civile of Cammarata and ask for a copy of his atto di nascita (birth act). In my experience, they will only look for one year at a time. So you will have to take a stab in the dark and ask them for the 10/21/1891 record and if you get a negative reply, then write again, asking for the 1890 record. You have to do your requests in Italian. Go to www.circolocalabrese.org for form letters.
