Diorio family search question

Postby DirtyJerzDiorio » 04 Apr 2008, 05:40

I am trying to look up anything I can about my great grandfather Carmine D'Orio. He had seven sons: Alessio, Joe, John, George, Julius, Pete, and Carl. He got married to Carmela Colella while in Italy. My dad says they were from naples, and we had soup kitchens to help feed the poor.
I have no clue when Carmine was born, if he had any brothers or sisters, or when he died. I found a Carmine D'Orio from Lacco Ameno but I am not truly positive if that is him or not because I do not know any other info besides his wife. Any help would be appreciated.

Late last year there was another person searching for Carmine D'Orio. I believe it was Giovanni777. Perhaps if you use the search function above to search for the D'Orio posts you'll be interested in the several pages of info re Giovanni's search for Carmine

Just a suggestion.

Hi Kyle,

Something else that might help. One of the seven sons you listed is your grandfather (I believe). Which brother was your grandfather and what year was he born? Where did your grandfather live when he was young and was your grandfather born in the US or in Italy?

My Grandfather was Julius Diorio. He was bon in New York, NY on March 21, 1924 and died April 27, 1974. He was married to Catherine Cibulski and I believe they got married in Manhattan. All of the brothers were born in Italy expect Julius and George, whos birthday was September 9, 1919 and he married Maria Cibulski which was Catherines sister.
As far as Carmine goes, I remember my dad telling me that he passed away when Julius was around 18 years old, so about 1942, and he said that Carmela Colella, his mother passed away when Julius was about 5 years old, so about 1929 or 1930. They lived on the lower east side of Manhattan on 1st and 10th. They shared most of the block with the Capone family and my family had Diorio Moving, a candy store, and a Deli right on that block.

I am kind of confused about Carmela coming to america a few different times. I also thought that Carmine and Carmela were married in Italy, but the one record says they were married in Manhattan which doesnt make sense because I thought that Carmine didnt come over until after that date. With all the new info, I am now not sure when Carmine came over to Ellis Island, or from what town he was from in Naples. And how hard is it to find out carmela's and carmine's parents information? The one document of the 1930 census was unbelieveable!

Hi Kyle!

just a little suggestion to you... I saw on the 1913 arrival manifest for Carmina Colella and child that she declared Pietradefusi as last residence and as mother in law Maria Luigia Ambrosina?(the same first name of first child) living in Pietradefusi....so probably this town was the town of origin of the Di Iorio.....
And did you noticed that the two first child of the list (Maria Luigia and Ida Rosina) were born in USA?

Kyle,

I'm a little confused too, but this is another VERY interesting arrival manifest about your ancestors:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Maria Lugia Di Zorio (right spell on the manifest Di Iorio)
Name: Maria Lugia Di Zorio
Arrival Date: 17 Jun 1911
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Ship Name: Berlin
Search Ship Database: View the Berlin in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Nativity: Avellino
Line: 26
Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_1696
Birth Location: Avellino
Birth Location Other: pietradefan Pietradefusi
Page Number: 177

Page 1:
[img=http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/1953/diioriomarialuigia1911arc5.th.jpg]
Page 2:
[img=http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2932/diioriomarialuigia1911agl7.th.jpg]

this young girl (age 18) was travelling with her brother Pietro (age 13) and a man Carminantonio Di Iorio (age 40)
This man declared he was leaving in Italy (in Torre le Nocelle - Avellino Province - Campania Region) his wife Carmina... Maria Luigia and Pietro were declaring to leave in Italy their grandmother Maria Luigia Ambrosina... Maria Luigia was in USA before from 1898 to 1904, Pietro was born in USA and them both declared to joining the father Antonino Di Iorio living in New York E. 2nd Avenue.
Carmine declared he was in Usa before until 1902, he was joining the BROTHER Antonino... same address...
So we can say that Carmine right name was Carminantonio di Iorio and he has at least a brother in NYC, Antonino... Possible their birth place was Torre le Nocelle or Pietradefusi (same province Avellino)

A very interesting and great site about genalogy on Torre Le Nocelle :

In the section "Archivi Comunali" and then "Atti di nascita" both in the years 1868 and 1870 there are birth acts about two Carmine Di Iorio (maybe you can try to contact the persons of this site, they're writing they have the originals of all these acts)

http://www.torrelenocelle.com/storia/ge ... /index.htm

the Archivi Comunali:

http://www.torrelenocelle.com/storia/ge ... /index.htm

edit: in this page you can find various census "ecclesiastici" you need a free password...
http://www.torrelenocelle.com/storia/ge ... astici.htm

Really a great site! :!:

Laura

Edit to add details:
here is Maria Luigia Di Iorio (possible Antonio0s Daughter) birth act.... the age on her arrival manifest in 1911 matches with this birth act....

Torre le Nocelle

ATTI DI NASCITA 1893

#4 Maria Luigia Antonietta Di Iorio
