Surname: Ostenzi or Ostensi

Post by jbutcher »

In my family, I have Fransesco Ostensi who immigrated to US in 1888. His estimated date of birth is 1849. He came on the ship Nederland out of Antwerp, Belgium. He settled in Houghton, MI. I am having such a difficult time with the last name. It does not show up often when searched. There was a Luigi Ostensi who immigrated in 1914 and he is listed as from the town, Montegiorgio in Italy. Is there that few of people with this name or is the spelling incorrect and changed at immigration? Please help. He was married to Angelina Deandi. Thank you.

Can you find any information on Frank Ostensi's wife, Angelina Deandi? I wonder when she came to the US?

The 1910 census and the 1920 census indicate he was naturalized. If you can locate a copy of his naturalization papers, they might show his place of birth; with that information, you can write to the town and request a copy of his birth act. 1920 census gives naturalization year as 1892. Since he naturalized before 1906, however, there may be very little information on his papers.

Have not located any records for his wife Angelina Deandi but suspect the surname is corrupted.

Here is Francesco's manifest record. Note the date, he emmigrated in 1880, not 1888.

Is it possible that the original name is Ortensi? That is an Italian surname.

Here's the original manifest from Ancestry. Looks like Ostensi to me.

Yes it does,

But I searched and searched. Ostensi and its variations do not appear as Italian surnames. Either the name has been corrupted or is not originally Italian. Suanj would be the expert on this.

Also it is likely that Angelina's name is D'A**** (like D'Andrea or De Andrea) What do you think?

Perhaps the original of this marriage record may help

Thank you for all of the information. Where did you access a copy of a passport? Secondly, I have that Angelina Deandi or Dianda's parents were Jacob Diandi and Minnie Martin. Can that information be found easily. I really appreciate how much work that was done.
