Postby jordy1390 » 27 Apr 2008, 16:15

Hi,
I've resently started researching my family and I've hit a bit of a bump. I'm a Australian, and I'm researching the Fiorenza side (my mums dad) of my family. This is what I've got so far.

Great Grandad: Domenico Antonio Fiorenza
Born: 24 Jul 1901 Caulonia, Reggio Calabria, Italy (Likely this one)
or 24 Jul 1905 Caolonia, Reggio Calabria, Italy
Emigrated to Australia: Nov 1924, Melbourne, Victoria. Ship - SS Palermo
Wife: Maria Roccisano
Siblings: 1 sister, 2 brothers (lived in Tasmainia during WW2)

Great Great Grandad: Lorenao Vincenzo Fiorenza (father of D A Fiorenza)
Lived in Caulonia, Reggio Calabria, Italy

Great Great Grandma: Teresa Panaia (mother of D A Fiorenza)
Lived in Caulonia, Reggio Calabria, Italy

At this point thats all I have, the family could have been involved in organisted crime, thou my grandad isn't willing to talk about it. Any sugestions, research or help would be greatly appeciated. Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum,

The town is Caulonia, in the province of Reggio Calabria. All three surnames appear presently in Caulonia. Roccisano is the most common.

The Family history Center (Mormon Church) has the civil records for the province, including the town of Caulonia from 1866 to 1910. Here is the link.

I am from USA and have hit a bump with my Fiorenza relatives from Caulonia, Reggio Calabria Italy also. My Great Grandfather was born Vincenzo Fiorenza in 1897 in Caulonia. I do not know his father's name. His wife was Giovanna Maria Argiro Fiorenza. He came to the USA in 1920 to thye Syracuse/ Auburn New York area and lived with his mother's cousins the "carni's" first in Auburn NHY, and then Syracuse NY where he ultimately settled. A few years later his wife Giovanna Argiro and his mother Caterina Carni and his two sons Ilario Cosimo (my grandfather) and Albo, came to the US. They all settled in Syracuse, NY and Vincenzo and Giovanna had two more children, Lena and Louis.

While in the United States they all Americanized their names which between the illiterate census takers, accents, and "nicknames" made it difficult to track but b/c I knew they were all in Syracuse, NY, it wasn't too hard. Ilario was known by everyone as Larry. His father Vincenzo who is possibly Domenico's brother was always known as Jimmie. Giovanna, Vincezos wife was known as "Mary".

Regarding history in Italy, I have not been able to find much of anything. Rumor has it that Vincenzo had two brothers, one of whom went Australia. I do know that Vincenzo's father (name unknown)had come to the USA years before Vincenzo to work on building an important Bridge in NYC area and he then went back to Italy and I have no information beyond that.
