Lorenzo/Laurenzo

Postby bobficoturo » 27 Apr 2008, 18:48

Hi All - I'm trying to trace the roots of my maternal grandmother, Maria Lorenzo (I've found evidence her name might really have been spelled Laurenzo but at this point I can't be sure). She is from a town just outside of Naples called Casserta, and she claims to have arrived in the US in 1902 at the age of 14. Two sisters and two brothers also came to this country, but a brother and a sister eventually returned to Italy. The brother who remained was named Carmino, and the sister's name is a little fuzzy to me because she was always called Zia - Her Italian name would have been the American equivelant to Jenny.

My problem is that I can't find my grandmother arriving here in 1902. The closest I can get is a Maria Laurenzo (different spelling) arriving here in 1905 (three years after my Nona said she got here) at the age of 15 - according to Nona, she would have been 17 in 1905. This is very frustrating. Can anyone point me in a helpful direction? Thanks loads

BF

Welcome to the forum!
If your grandmother was traveling with her mother she may be
on the manifest under her mother's maiden name.
What was her destination & who would she have been joining?
Thanks! Valarie

note: her town may be Caserta,
province of Caserta, Campania region

Hi Valerie - Thanks so much for the reply. See answers to your questions/comments below.

vj wrote:If your grandmother was traveling with her mother she may be on the manifest under her mother's maiden name.

She was traveling alone. It always astounded me that she made that trip alone at that age. She never described herself as scared. however. She told of an older woman who befriended her and, I believe, looked after her.

vj wrote:What was her destination

Her destination was NYC, although she ended up in a commune of sorts working in a sweat shop in laurence, Mass.

vj wrote:& who would she have been joining?

She was sponsored, I believe, by an organization that did such things for a fee (I believe it was paid to them in the old country) in order to acquire cheap labor - the stories my grandmother told were not pretty. Bottom line - she didn't know the man who "claimed her". She was with many others who were trucked from NYC to Mass. and put up in the same place.

note: her town may be Caserta,
province of Caserta, Campania region

You are correct. I misspelled it in my message. Her descriptions of the place of her birth were vivid and very interesting. Thanks.

Can you tell me the significance of the line: Birth Location Other

I find it curious to even ask such information, much less have data to satisfy it. Perhaps I don't understand what it is conveying.

Thanks again suanj. For the first time in a long time I feel encouraged that there is a path passed all of the roadblocks I've encountered.

Maria's birth year I believe to be June 1888. Carmino (when he was alive we referred to him as Zio Carmino, but his name may very well be Carmine) I thought was an older brother, although I thought not much older. Also, by 1909, I believe that Maria had married and settled in Providence, RI. For this reason, I believe this first record has an equally good chance of being the right one as does the last record.

What makes things a little fuzzy is that Maria did not go to school, and therefore, could not read nor write. Why we think her name was "LORENZO" is because Zio Carmino, who did read and write, spelled his name that way. Keep in mind that my recollections of him only go back to the late 60's and early 70's. Lord only knows what pressures were brought to bare on the spelling of the name before that.

Maria's married name was Campagnone. His firdt name was Luigi, and I believe he was either from Caserta of someplace very close by... certainly from Campagna.

oh, yes, maybe Carmine travel colud be one of this above... or maybe another... Lugi Compagnone also was born in Caianello:
U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
about Luigi Compagnone
Name: Luigi Compagnone
Birth Date: 20 Nov 1885
RESIDENCE: Providence, Rhode Island
Birth: Cainnallo, Italy (Caianello)
Race: White
Roll: WW2_2368317

in the:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Luigi Compagnone
Name: Luigi Compagnone
City: Providence
County: Providence
State: Rhode Island
Birth Date: 20 Dec 1884
Race: White
Roll: 1852408
DraftBoard: 9

same person, the birthdate is different.... but no problem, because
the wife is Mary Compagnone...

I believe that both coming from Caianello... many Laurenzas immigrated in USA, and they was residents in Providence, RI or Laurence, MA... so it is very probable the italian birthplace... now we must find almost the 1910 census, so we can know Maia immigration year...
abt "birth location other" is listed the province( caserta) and more precise the town of birth in province area... regards, suanj

Just a note,

The words Zio and Zia are Italian for uncle and aunt. Zio Carmino is Uncle Carmine and Zia is Aunt Jenny. There are many possibitities for Jenny's Italian first name.

Hi!
From Luigi Compagnone's WWI draft Card (Dec. 9, 1918) the address seems:
40 Swiss street, Providence
so maybe this is a possible 1920 census for him and his family??
The house number is 40, I checked the previouse page....
