As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

My great-grandfather, Ignazio DiMaggio, served in the Guardia di Pubblica Sicurezza a cavallo in Alia, Sicily, around 1888. Is there any way to get copies of documents about his service with this provincial police force? Was this considered the military at that time? I am trying to find information about his birthplace and his parents names. Thanks to anyone who can help.
