Italian Military

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

When did military service become obligatory in Italy? Also, when looking for military records, as far back as what year do you think they can be found? Are there records prior to unified Italy?

Military recoprds in some regions began about 1792 but conscription of all males at age 18 was instituted in 1865 even disabled to this day are required to report to the local draft board for a physical exam. Italian draft records list every native Italian male who was biorn from about 1850 to the present and who did not leave the country at an early age. =Peter=
