superstition - upside down loaf of bread

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

superstition - upside down loaf of bread

Postby Steverino3006 » 08 May 2009, 16:11

My mom always got after us if we put the loaf of bread in the bread basket upside down, and made us turn it over. We kept asking her why, and one time she said it was "pulling the Virgin Mary's hair". Then she said, "no, that's something else . . ."

any thoughts on either of these two superstitions?

In my region, the bread basket upside down= Jesus face upside down
that because the bread basket was identified with Eucharist...
it is no a superstition, but a expression of deep religious sense of simple people..
