As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.
Are you sure it's a first name? I don't know of any first name that sounds like that... But it reminds me of the sicilian word for the "poor thing", in relating to a person: MESCHINA or mischina (Mes-kee-nah) (mee-skee-nah)
