WWI records for grandfather from Trabia, Sicily

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

The reference to Giuseppe Rinella refers to YOUR request.

The official is sorry to tell you that their archives and the state archives in Palermo do not hold the martriculation records for births prior to 1880.

How do I tell them I am not looking for birth, just his military record?

I will rephrase what T. already stated:
The official is sorry to tell you that their archives and the state archives in Palermo do not hold the military records for people born prior to 1880
