Child not recognized at birth

Postby jwazevedo » 01 Feb 2010, 04:10

From this excerpt of a birth record:

It seems that this child was not recognized at birth, but I don't understand the specific reasons. Can someone tell me the obstacle to recognition?

(Four years later, the parents married, and the child was recognized then.)

Grazie,
Jerry

It does not explain the reason why it was not recognized. The document only says that the mother was not married and was not a relative of the father.

Often the marriage was only religious, not recognized by the state. People would recognize their children only after the civil marriage...

In one town in the Papal States the town did not name the parents of a child born to a couple not married civilly. In one family the only male child was recognised by the father only, the two female children were presented by the midwife and no parents named. All were ultimately recognised at the time of the civil marriage even though they had been living as a family all along.
