You may find the above document helpful. It opens in pdf format. Go to chapter two on Civil Birth Records.

Another good source is Italian Genealogical Records by Trafford Cole. You can read excerpts of this book on google.com

Hi there,

Hope this helps some.
Trish

****

Ordinal Number 1

In the year one thousand eight hundred fifty-eight, on day three of the month of January, at
the hour eighteen before us Felice Antonio Pagliaro (Pagliaso), Mayor and the Official Vital Records of the
Town of Alitia, the District of Cosenza, and the Province of Calabria,

appeared Raffaele, Fiorito, of age thirty, of profession farmer, resident of Maione on Contrada Piazza, who has introduced a baby that we have visibly witnessed and he had declared that the same was born of Carmine Fiorito and Giovanna Pagliaro, the first (Carmine) of age thirty-two, the second (Giovanna) of age thirty, residents of the town, at the hour of ten of today,

The same has also declared to give to the baby the name of Giovanni

The aforesaid presentation and declaration was made in the presence of Domenico Gigliano, of age thirty, of profession farmer, residing in Maione on Contrada Piazza, and of Gabriele Patella, of age thirty-six, of profession farmer, residing in Maione on Contrada Piazza. Witnesses taking part of the present act and of the informant, produced.

The present act, that we have created as necessary, and was written above as two copies, read to the informant and to the witnesses, and then on the day, month and year above, signed by me and not the witnesses nor the informant who have stated that they do not know how to write.
