Simple translation of a name.

Post by bottino »

I have encountered the name, Jois many times in my reading of birth records. All of my help guides do not contain this name. Sometimes it has a curved line over the middle of the name indicating it probably is an abbreviation.
Can someone please help me with the translation of this name. The records I am reading are in Latin.
Thank you.

This is a question for our Latin expert, Livio, so I hope he will see this and be able to help you.

Interesting is that Jois is a small town in eastern Austria, according to wikipedia.

The name you are looking for is Jo(ann)is, that is the shorten genitive form for the latin name Joannes, that stands for the italian Giovanni.

Excellent, Thanks Luca. I knew it was an abbreviation, and I have been seeing it a lot. Thanks for clearing this up.
