He was born in Capua of "incerti genitori"-uncertain parentage
Oddly the surname Garitta appears to be associated with various Sicilian towns if you look at Ellis Island passenger lists.

Part of the problem was that we were looking for a surname that we knew existed in the town. If he was of uncertain parentage, his surname was probably the invention of some town official.
