Postby DebiHarbuck » 05 Nov 2010, 11:00

Can anyone help with a translation of this birth record any any notations? The image is not the best quality.

Hi Debi,

I translated what I could of the first image when I realized it was the first record (Viggiano) and was not the one you wanted...

Back to the document! :-)

This was a challenge (and I love challenges), but I hope someone else will take a look. It is very hard to read. That being said :-)

What I see is:

Document dated 5 November 1874, 10 PM at the town hall
Appeared Vito Leone, son of deceased Filippo, age 31 (?), shepherd
To declare that on 3 November of the current year, was born to his wife,
___gherita Marresa/Marraza (?), daughter of deceased Nicola, age 26 (?) at the house on Strada ____ #10, a baby girl they named Maria Maddelena Leone.
Witnesses look like Giacomo Conte(?), son of deceased Francesco, 40, cabman; and Fabrizio Spera (?), son of deceased Domenico, 41, peasant farmer.

First name of mother was Margherita (my first name in Italian). I see Marresa as her surname.

Yes, that is what I thought for the first name (beautiful name)

Glad to see you agree with the surname...

I think Spera's first name is Francesco. I think what you are seeing as a b is the loop coming down from the word above it. His father's first name is Domenicantonio

Vito Leone was the son of deceased Giuseppe not deceased Filippo. I see his age as 21 and not 31, but I could be wrong on that.

I also struggled with the age, and thought perhaps it was 21, but it just didn't look like it to me, especially looking back at the hour (ventidue) above it... not the same strokes.

As for Vito's father? Have to take another look... :-)

Tessa & Peg, thank you both so much!!

I know that Vitoantonio Leone married Margherita Marrese in Craco in 1868. So wonderful to have their father's names AND confirm they are the parents of Maria Maddelena.

A GOOD genealogy day, indeed! :)

Me too! And I sure needed it after yesterday. Yesterday was one of those days...culminating in a letter from the SSA denying me a copy of my great-grandfather's application since they didn't have any proof of his death.

Silly me...I thought the fact the he was born in 1872 would be proof enough! :)
