Need help reading image from ship manifest

Postby blissiorio » 16 Dec 2010, 21:30

Hi all,

The image below is a section of my great grandfather's ship manifest. It is from the column which lists the name of their nearest friend or relative in their home country.

For this, I am pretty lost. The handwriting is TERRIBLE.

What I know is that there are three sections (my GGF and two siblings)

1. her (or his) _________ _____________ Iuorio / Campagna

2. his ___________ ____________ ____________ Ciaffoletta (?) - Campagna

3. his ________________ ___________________ Iuorio / Campagna
Image

Known members of this family: Parents: Antonio, Paolina
Siblings: Michele (on ship, line 2), Carmine (on ship, line 3), Gennaro, Giuseppina, Vita (on ship, line 1), Assunta
any guesses are appreciated!

Bill

Hey Bill
You're right it's pretty awful
We may need to look at the entire page to see if there are similar letters or combinations of letters
Can you link it?
Thanks, Valarie

Hi Bill,

Any chance you can upload the entire page? Helps us to see handwriting in known words to decipher others...

Wow - thanks so much!!! So impressed that you found the original image!!!

Looking back on it... Michele in 1920 has a wife on the census named Mary... so that makes sense. I cannot confirm her maiden name... looks like Cioffoletti. Cioffoletti makes more sense than my original guess of Ciaffoletti.... I know Italians named Cioffi / Cioffe but none named Ciaffe.

Lines 10 and 12 being Antonio Iorio (who did not emigrate until 5 years later) definitely make sense. That was my hunch but I am happy you guys could confirm it... the handwriting is so bad!

It took me so long to find this image on ancestry.com because Iuorio (and Iorio ever since) was keyed in as "Suoris." I can see that but come on, nobody in Italy is named Suoris!!

Thanks very much, vj and Tessa!

it is hard to see the ship manifest written by your grandfather, you can use the OCR image reading c# technology to scan image and improve reading ability.
