Postby fairhilleng » 17 Mar 2011, 19:36

I'm requesting help with the translation of a birth baptism record at the following link:
http://img151.imageshack.us/i/184641ret ... iacin.jpg/
My main goal is to determine the FIRST name of the child the record is for.
My understanding so far is:
Upper left corner lists name: Rettagliata ?first name? ?next name? Chiara
line 5: born the 5 day of the month of October 1846
line 7: child of Giovanni Rettagliata of Antonio
line 8 ... living ? ? di Rovegno
line 9 mother Luigia of Andrea C??neo
line 12: what is this stating?
line 13: name of child? ? Giuseppina Chiara
line 14: godfather: Antonio Poggi of ?
line 16: godmother: Chiara ? of Andrea?
lines 20-23: what is this stating?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Child's full name is Fiorinda Giuseppina Chiara Rettagliata (the second name is abbreviated in the margin)

Born on the 5 October 1846 and baptized on the 6 October 1846 at
S. Giovanni Evangelista in Rovegno
Father was Giovanni Rettagliata son of Antonio, peasant farmer
Mother was Luigia daughter of Andrea Ca??nso, peasant farmer, residing (same as Giovanni), his wife ("conjugi Rettagliata")
Godfather was Antonio Poggi
Godmother is Charia Ca??nso daughter of Andrea (probably mother's sister)
Last part states that the godfather Antonio Poggi signed the document with the official...
Both the godfather and godmother were peasant farmers as well.

I have to look more closely at the location stated in "residing at" :-)

If you go to this site for Rovegno and click on the link to the map of Rovegno...Keep clicking on the enlargement and you will see "Frazione Zerbo" a small hamlet of Rovegno. This is probably the location mentioned in the birth/baptism document...

Thank you very much! I've never seen the name Fiorinda before. I agree that's what it appears to be. I'm searching for my great great grandmother Giacinta Rettaliata born in Rovegno c 1845-1847. Do you think there is any chance this could be translated to Giacinta? I've found many records for her in the US from 1867 to 1907, however, I could not find her parent's names listed in marriage records or death records. Therefore, I'm searching for her birth record in Rovegno's church records (LDS films) without knowing her parents names. I'm thinking that Giacinta is unique enough to find. I have viewed all of the Rettagliata birth/baptism records from 1845 to 1859. I've ordered the film for births before 1845 thinking she was older than what the census records note (which almost everyone has experienced before) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't discount this record...could be a relative (would be nice if it was a sister!!!)

BTW - Do you know the names of Giacinta's children? Husband? Any OTHER relatives?

Do you have any manifests? Did she travel back to Italy ever?

EDIT: Found your Family Tree on Ancestry... :-)

I looked at the 1870 Census you have cited on the Family Tree and noticed that there are two families above Charles Foppiano - both with the name "Coneo" - of course we don't know if that is the correct spelling... :-)

Many families from the same town settled near each other in US, and certainly if they were family...

The name could be - Caneo, Coneo, Conio, Cannea, Cannao, Cannas - all found in Genoa area - and could be the missing surname in the birth/baptism record above.
Keep that record on file!!! :-D

Fairhilleng,
Giacinta Rettaliata is my Great Great Great Grandmother. My Great Grandmother was Katherine D'Alesandro (Rosasco) wife of Ernani Costantini. I'm wondering how we may be related.
