Please Help with Occupations and Location(?)

Postby hmhrco » 01 Jun 2011, 02:37

Hello!

As a regular lurker, I’ve learned a lot from reading posts and replies but never thought I’d be fortunate enough to have Italian records for my husband’s side of the family.

My husband’s great-grandfather’s occupation on a daughter’s death registration is clearly given as a laborer, bracciante, and is the only occupation for which I can understand the handwriting and translate. On two other children’s birth and death registrations, I can’t decipher the handwriting.

On his marriage registration, I have the pertinent facts except for what he gives as his occupation and the two words after Napoli. FYI, he was a foundling of Napoli. The occupation as recorded on the marriage registration is what is usually given on other children’s birth and death registrations as his occupation and, obviously, I can't make out the handwriting on them. The time period is 1880 - late 1890s.

Any help with the three occupations and words after Napoli would be very much appreciated!

Thank you,
Helen

Hi Helen - Welcome :-)

As much as we appreciate posters' efforts to enlarge parts of documents, it is much better if we can see an entire record to compare the shapes of letters within other words...

That being said...
image 1 - looks like "pastore" - shepherd
image 2 - a little more difficult to read without seeing the rest of the document, looks like it might be "ferraro/ferraio" - blacksmith
image 3 - I can't really tell without seeing the rest of the record...

Sorry for the inconvenience; I do that myself - compare to other words so I should have realized that would be easier for anyone helping. I was using the individual words to try and decipher them in photo software.

Here are the whole registrations with the marriage registration in two parts since it was on two pages.

Thank you for your help and interest thus far and for your welcome.

Hi

I think the occupation of Arturo looks like pastaio.
It is a pasta or macaroni maker.

I think he is from the "city of pasta"

Good luck.

Maybe a pasta maker.... interesting!

I know he was living in Torre Annunziata at the time of his marriage (and until he came to the US in 1902) but don’t know for how long before that. Because he was a founding of Naples, there’s nothing else to go on regarding his background, plus he returned to Italy around 1910 and the family lost touch with him. His wife died in 1908 here in the US.

Many thanks for your help.

Thank you for posting the whole image for the records...

On the birth record of Giovanna it is clear now that the occupation listed (as referenced above in red) is actually "fornaio" which translates to "baker"... It is the same ococupation as the first witness at the bottom of the record...

Thank you for your translation which would seem to go along with being a pasta maker per another reply. I appreciate your efforts.
