What are the key elements which helped to identfy the child as a male. When I saw Maria in the name I thought maybe this would be a female child.

Angelus (nominative) = male
Angela (nominative) = female
filius = male
filia = female
natum = male
natam = female
Angeli (genitive) = male
Angelae (genitive) = female

Maria was used (and it's still used) as second name also for males, in honour of the Virgin Mary.
