I noticed on Goggle there is quite a number of sites that translate english to Italian or vice a versa, is there a site that anyone recommends for free translations.

Nope :( Google itself has a rather good translator. But you can't rely on any online translator! (especially if you want to translate letters that were written by the emigrants, they are often a mixture of Italian a and Dialect with very poor grammar).
