Help needed with birth record

Post by dmt1955 »

I would appreciate any assistance in deciphering and translating the attached birth record. I am most interested in
1. spelling of maria guiseppa's last name (spelling in left column looks different than signature at bottom of record
2. spelling of father's last name (If i'm accurate, first name is Antonio)
3. mother's name
4. actual date of birth
5. any other relevant information that is in record.

I have attached 2 images of different magnifications. i can attempt to magnify image more if needed.

thanks so much!

2. spelling of father's last name (If i'm accurate, first name is Antonio) Too hard to see clearly
3. mother's name No mother is named. It states that the child was born from his union with a woman who was not married, not a relative, and does not need to be named.
4. actual date of birth Date of birth is 20 March 1903 or 1906. Date of record is 23 March.
5. any other relevant information that is in record.

Thank you Livio & Tessa for your input. I read the name as Purcaro, also.

A few questions follow from this.

First, (and i realize the quality of this is not very good - it's the best copy i could get from the microfilm)...Would you please direct me to where in the record is the child's date of birth. (I would like to become more adept at reading these records and deciphering the handwriting.)

Secondly, how would you understand the influences(community, religious, etc), at play that even though the parents may not be married, the mother "does not need to be named." Is it meant to 'shame' the female / her family?

Finally, there is a very high probability that Maria Guiseppa is my grandmother. Some of the challenge in researching my maternal line have been not knowing her father's name and the correct spelling of the surname & her mother's name. I know from family stories that her mother (my GGM) had a number of stillborn children after Ma Guiseppa's birth and circa 1920 GGM dies shortly after giving birth to another daughter, who was then sent to a convent in her early teens. I am pretty sure it is the same man with whom she has these children.

There are no microfilms available through LDS - FamilySearch.org for 1920. I'm not sure which avenue(s) to pursue next. Any thoughts on next steps??

Thanks so much for any suggestions.

Here is a line by line Transcription of the handwriting:

The rest of the document has no relevance from a genealogical point of view.

The child name is Maria Giuseppa Purcaro
The father is Antonio Purcaro, aged 34, farmer
The birth date is March 20, 1906
The mother was a "a woman who was not married, not a relative or akin within the degrees that would prevent the recognition (of the baby)"

Often the child was recognized later, when his parents got legally married.
