To quote Trafford Cole in Italian Genealogical Records (a great resource!)...
"The marriage ceremony was actually the last step in a long bureaucratic process. It was first necessary to make out a document in which the couple declared their intent to be married; it was call the atto di solenne promessa di celebrare il matrimonio. Then the bann, called notificazione, was written (found in the Pubblicazione records). Finally, several weeks later (after the posting of the notificazione on consecutive Sundays), the actual marriage was performed."
