What is BD on catasti--or is it?

Postby lcafarel » 09 Sep 2012, 02:40

Can anyone tell me what the BD is after Pietro's name on this page from the 1830 Craco catasti? This spot is usually filled with the father's name or an occupation or other descriptor (e.g., vedova).

Or could it be not BD, but Bte for "benesante"--"well to do?"

Thanks.

Thank you for your thoughts, Sabino. I do not think the B stands for bracciale, as I've seen other pages in the same catasti with bracciale, and it is not abbreviated this way. I've also seen seminatorio on some pages where the property owner is clearly well off.

I wondered if the letters might really be Bte for benestante because the Craco Society website describing these catasti includes that as one of the descriptors found. I'll see if they can send me other pages with this descriptor to see how it is written.

If anyone else can decipher this, I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks again, Sabino.
