Help with old Bellomo records

Postby bvbellomo » 20 Jan 2014, 16:32

My great-grandfather was born in Polizzi Generosa, as was his father and grandfather. His great-great grandfather (my 5th great grandfather), Emmanuele Bellomo, was born in Caltanissetta about 1763 according to his death record. I've gone through just about everything in Polizzi, so I wanted to see my family records in Caltanissetta, and I ordered "Battesimi 1710-1767" from "Chiesa cattolica. Parrocchie di Caltanissetta (Caltanissetta)".

Disappointingly, there was no Emmanuel Bellomo baptized on that film, so he was probably born/baptised after 1767. His father's name was 'Vincenzo' and I found several Vincenzo Bellomo's. I was surprised to see very few Bellomo's in the records, I was expecting either hundreds or none at all.

Here is a copy of the header of one of the Vincenzo's in the index.

This looks like the index is 2 years, 1713-1714 says it is for baptisms, and it is by first name. Is there anything on this header that tells me anything else? What is Anno Settima (seventh year?). Does this have the name of the parish?

Here is the actual record:

I cannot make out much, but I see the name Jacobi, which to me seems unusual for Sicily. I also see the name Joseph, and what looks like Palermo. Can anyone make out anything more?

I had a few other Bellomo records, but I think I will do better if I can read this one, and the quality of the other photos are even worse. I want to try to figure out what I can read, send a photoduplication request to try to get a better copy, and then go back to the microfilm and try to read it again.

Here's some info from the record to help you.

I can't see the month, which would be on one of the baptism records above this one on the page or even the preceding page. The day was the 21st. The parents of the infant being baptized were Giacomo (which would be the Italian version of the Latin name Jacobi) and Anna Bellomo (in this record the priest did not use the mother's surname (what we would call her maiden name). The infant's name looks like Vincenzo Marco Bellomo to me. Godparents were Antonio Vitale, the son of deceased Giacomo and Filippa Vitale, and Angela Debilio, daughter of Giuseppe and Giuseppa de Palermo, spouses.

Wow, thanks!

Is the name Giacomo related to the name Gioachino? Gioachino is another name that shows up a lot in my family.

Here is another page of the index from the same year:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3322562/records/Bellomo%20Vincenzo/Index%20M.jpg

There is a Bellomo that starts with an 'M' on the same page, but no other 'Bellomo' records. Is it possible Marco was another person?

A while back, I posted another baptism with what I thought was an 'M' name, but someone told me this was not a name:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3322562/records/Bellomo%20Emmanuele%20G/allegeti/baptism.jpg

Could this be the same name/word?

In response to your questions-
1. I don't think the name Giacomo is related to the name Gioachino. The names Giacomo and Giacobbe are related-both meaning Jake, Jacob, or James. I believe that Gioachino is related to the name Joaquim or Joakim.

2. I have found in the church indices that when an individual had multiple first names, such as Vincenzo Marco, the name would be indexed under the letter V as Vincenzo and under the letter as Marco. So, if the page is the same for both, and you can only find one record, the two listings are probably for the same individual

3. in the record you posted for Emmanuele, there appear to me to be three first names, but I am not certain what the third name that starts with the letter M is.
